Introduction
Once in awhile it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.
- Alan Keightley -
If you are sitting here reading this the chances are you are not a seasoned pro who has been around the world a few times solo already. If you have this book in your hands it is more likely you are one of the many who dreams constant dreams of travel and lives with an itch that just will not go away.
Perhaps you already have reached the planning stage and if so read on; this book is full of tips, secrets, hacks and hints to make setting out into that great big world easier, safer, cheaper and adventure-filled. But if you are one of those still standing on the brink, gazing off longingly into the distance and somehow still not managing to take that last leap of faith to make your dreams reality this might just be the book which will change your world.
The biggest barriers for most people and which keep them home instead of heading out solo consist of multiple and sometimes unnamed fears, anxieties about being lonely and a belief that they just don't have enough money. All of those described me once-upon-a-time. But back in 2003 I sold my house, gave away my business and possessions and set out to travel the world. Fifteen years on I am still doing that, still finding the brand new, still painting my world the brightest colors it can be and without any intentions of stopping anytime soon.
I was no-one special. I wasn't brave (or mad as many suggested) nor was I running away from anything. I was just an ordinary person who had dreamed my entire life of seeing the world and finally somehow – at the grand age of 38 – finding the courage to do it. I was terrified. But it was a leap of faith from which I have never looked back. The point is if I can do it anyone can.
When I started traveling solo all those years ago there was still something of a stigma attached to going it alone; us solo fliers were considered by the world in general to be at least lonely (if not perhaps just a touch weird) and those without family or friends to share our travel experiences with. But I have watched the numbers of other solo travelers out there increase at break-neck speed; research shows that in many countries solo travel is the fastest-growing section in the field of tourism. More to the point, the same research also shows that us happy solo adventurers – some of our number even married - are not going alone because we have to but because we want to. According to a report published in The International Journal of Tourism Research (Vol 18, Issue 2, March/April 2016) entitled 'Solo Holiday Travellers: Motivators and Drivers of Satisfaction and Dissatisfaction', it would appear 'freedom, uncompromised fun and meeting new people' gets chosen voluntarily over setting out with a companion.
So solo travelers, in the pages which follow I can show you what a myth it is to think you have to have lots of money to travel, fit inside a certain stereotype or be a truly adventurous type. What's more I can help and guide you – step by step – to move beyond your fears. I will equip you with everything you need.
Even if this isn't your first foray into the world of solo travel this book may well hand you extra tools to pack into your travel experience bags, helping you to save money or enhance your adventures in one way or another. Some of the secrets I share here were early discoveries, others took me years to learn.
So, whether newbie or someone who already knows something of the incredible world of solo travel I am super excited for you. Whether you want to explore for a few days or a few years; whether you intend to stick closer to home or tread the farthest reaches of the planet; whether you intend to immerse yourself into the totally strange and alien or need to keep well within the confines of your own personal comfort zone – this book is for you. It doesn't matter whether you call yourself a tourist, a backpacker, a traveler or a holiday-maker. What matters is that you get out there, turn dreams into reality and get doing what you want to do, however that works for you to make you fulfilled, enriched and happy.
"There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say, ‘Yes, I’ve got dreams, of course I’ve got dreams.’ Then they put the box away and bring it out once in awhile to look in it, and yep, they’re still there."
- Emma Bombeck -

''A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.''

The world is full of those who dream of traveling. The world is not so full of those who actually do it. Why? Well, although each person has slightly different reasons there are also some common denominators, the biggest of which tends to be fear.
It is important to know that feeling fear is not just totally OK but absolutely normal. Anyone who suggests otherwise is either an extremely rare personality type or simply not telling the truth. There are few of
