Deidre N. Mathis
After being exposed to international travel in college through a study abroad program to the Dominican Republic, Deidre has since worked, studied, and traveled internationally to more than 30 countries on 6 continents. Deidre believes there is power in exposing yourself to the world: the power of learning about different cultures, the power of learning new languages, and the power of growth as an individual. She believes that traveling should not just be a luxury solely for the wealthy. She is especially excited to share her personal travel tales in hopes of inspiring others to see the world. By the time she earned her master’s degree, she had already taught English in South Korea, studied the Hindi language in India, and practiced Spanish in Costa Rica. After completing her degree, instead of putting it to use right away, she decided she would be courageous enough to quit her job and travel the world for a gap year to explore her life’s passions- that is how “Wanderlust: For the Young, Broke Professional” was born. In this book, Deidre shares her secrets on how she was able to explore such beautiful places without having a huge budget.

What is a Young, Broke Professional?
Let me start by welcoming you to the first page in a new chapter of your life: a chapter where you embrace the best and least predictable adventure that life has to offer – travel.
This is no ordinary travel book. It focuses closely on the needs of the YBP, or Young Broke Professional, largely based on my own experiences.
I’m Deidre Mathis, and for a long time, I have had a serious case of wanderlust. I have traveled to some of the most beautiful and exotic locations in the world, including India, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Hawaii, Mexico, and many more destinations within and beyond the U.S.A. In fact, I’ve traveled to over 23 countries in the past few years and my life has been far, far better for it. Thanks to travel, it has been extraordinary.
Am I a millionaire? Not yet! Do I have some mysterious circumstances that mean I have to hop on a plane every few weeks? No! I am simply, like you, a Young Broke Professional, who has a genuine passion for exploring the world we are all lucky enough to live in.
So – how can we define a Young Broke Professional? While I believe in the saying: you are only as young as you feel,
the typical YBP is normally between the ages of 18 and 35. You could be in almost any situation: in college, recently graduated, or thinking of taking a break in the middle of your career. Naturally, as a young person, you are more than likely still building up to a peak of professional and financial security. In other words, while you could be looking forward to the comfort money can bring in your later years, you are now yearning to use the skills you have acquired thus far to travel and explore the world, although you may not have a ton of cash set away to do so.
But…
You are a YBP who wants to experience the best the world has to offer, the world itself. You, like me, want to see the Taj Mahal, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, from just a few feet away. You, like me, might like to try Mofongo, a delicious plantain-based Puerto Rican delicacy, just because it has a cool name. And you, just like me, get a real thrill from landing somewhere new, knowing you can meet the locals, absorb all the sights and simply… explore.
A YBP with a true case of wanderlust refuses to sit at home wishing he or she had more money to travel the world in style. They simply pick up this book and get going!
It’s great to be a YBP! Who needs stacks of dollars, when with a little planning and a spirit of adventure, you can visit the best places in the world in a manner that suits your budget? Even without much money, the world can still be your oyster – Wanderlust will show you how.
It is important to indulge any feelings of wanderlust that you may be
