    How to use this book

There's a lot of information out there on travelling and travel planning. I know I slogged through it all researching my own travels. So where do you start?

The purpose of this book is twofold - to gather all the useful information together into one place and to take the stress out of your travel planning.

This book presents information with step by step instructions on what you need to think about to plan your first overseas adventure, with links to calculators, checklists and apps to make your life even easier - after all, an overseas adventure is supposed to be fun, right? There is a master check list at the end of this book if you want something to print out and check off as you go.

The second thing I've included here is hundreds of tips and tricks I've learned firsthand during my years of travel. These are mostly aimed at backpackers, as this is my preferred form of travel, however there is something in here for everyone, from first-timers to seasoned veterans. So sit back, learn from my mistakes, laugh at my anecdotes and begin your planning with all the information you need to create your dream adventure.

Use the clickable contents page to jump to the sections that interest you, or follow through from start to finish, planning as you go. Each chapter includes quotes, personal anecdotes, information, links, checklist, and a step by step formula to help you accomplish your dream trip. This book will save you time, money and stress.

    Preface

It is better to travel well than to arrive.

    Buddha

I've been addicted to travelling since almost the moment I began. Nothing in my early years suggested I would become a vagabond. I started with the usual holiday excursion after graduating, then at age 25 I looked up one day and realized that I was a prisoner in my own life. I quit my job, sold my house and hit the road as a full time travelling performer. I've lived out of a backpack for years at a time and performed and taught in diverse locations all over the world.

Looking at it from the outside, the life of a travelling artist may seem glamorous and impossibly difficult to attain, but believe me, it's not. I'm just an ordinary girl with bills to pay, friends I wish I had more time for, and hopes and dreams for the future. I am living proof that you don't need to be rich, connected or by any means a genius to have a lifestyle based around travelling.

Well that's easy for you to say but I don't even know where to start.

But you've had years of experience - how do I know I won't forget something vital?

I just want to get the most from my holiday - I don't need to be a travel expert to do that do I?

I conceived this book when a friend asked for help planning her first European holiday. She was excited but totally intimidated by all the options and terrified she would waste the opportunity. I was a little stunned - I thought everyone knew how to plan a trip but it was very overwhelming for her and she kept putting it off.

I thought back to my first plane journey, my first backpacking trip, my first solo adventure and realized how different things would have been if I had known then what I know now. As much as I love travelling, there are up and downs and thousands of little things I could have done to make my life easier on the road. It wasn't until I started writing that I realized just how much information I've gained through my years of roaming the planet.

Travel changed my life. That’s pretty much all there is to it. Not just the amazing things I've seen and the people I've met, but also the way I think -. the way I treat myself, my personal values and morals. It's something I wish everyone had the opportunity to experience. So this is my gift to you. Hopefully it means a little less stress in the planning and a little more comfort on the road. Welcome to the great adventure!

Why Travel? - Some Things To Consider

Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

    Mary Ritter Beard

If you have downloaded this book, chances are you are thinking about travelling overseas. Whether it's a short vacation or a round-the-world trip, travel has long been used as a coming-of-age ritual, to expand the mind and escape the confines of a conventional life.

Travelling overseas has a number of benefits

    1) It takes you out of your environment/comfort-zone. When you are not surrounded by familiar things and the safety net is taken away, you will be amazed at how you develop as a person. Travel makes you brave. Whether it's jumping out of a plane or learning to be comfortable eating at a restaurant by yourself, travelling forces you to work outside your comfort zone.

    2) Travelling makes you live in the moment. Chances are you're seeing something that you'll never see again. You learn to make the most of every moment and to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

    3) Travelling teaches you to be yourself. There is something freeing about being able to be whoever you want to be because you will never see someone again. You can be you, unapologetically, state your accomplishments .

    4) Travelling makes you more confident. You learn how to start a conversation with a stranger and in time you will become proud that you can handle everything the road throws at you.

    5) You become more adaptable - what do you mean the highway is closed??? Things that would have once been a big
