Travel Fun, Travel Solo - Fiona Adams
Introduction
Have you always had a yen for travelling? I know that I did – right out of high school, I knew that I really wanted to travel the globe and see the ancient sites that I had learned so much about in school – I wanted to put all that information that I had drummed into my skull to good use – to pontificate on the purposes of the pyramids in Egypt and South America. To see if I too could consult the Oracle of Delphi; walk along the exact same roads that Caesar did and to follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo himself.
Both East and West beckoned and I made a lot of plans – plans that unfortunately did not come to fruition until many years later. You see my younger self had always had the idea that travelling was not something to be undertaken by oneself. I would not even take a holiday down the coast on my own, let alone cross oceans.
It’s amazing the things that stick in your mind when you are making plans – I will never forget the story a friend of the family told about his family trip to the Middle East – his big joke about the trip was that someone had offered to buy his wife but he had not accepted because he was offered too few camels.
Whilst I doubt that something like this will happen nowadays, it is something that helped to create the concept in my mind that travelling by oneself alone, especially as a woman, was unsafe. Add into that the lack of confidence I had at the time and traveling on my own became out of the question.
So I got on with my life – I got married and settled down. Whilst my travel dreams were still at the back of my mind, other things became more important. A huge mortgage put paid to any further travel plans and, whilst I hadn’t given up on the idea completely, travel for me was becoming less likely by the day.
My aha
moment came just after signing my divorce papers at 32. The house was to be sold so there would no longer be any financial issues holding me back. I could work from anywhere that had a god internet connection and so that was okay as well.
After being stifled in my marriage, I was dying to be free – did I want a companion? No, not at all. I sat back to look at what I was doing with my life and decided that the time to make the change was right away, before something else ended up getting in the way of it.
I knew that if I did nothing about travelling now, I would regret it forever. So I booked a trip to Dubai – on my own, gasp, and boy did my family freak out! Even my ex-husband weighed in and my mother brought the local pastor in to warn me of the dangers of travelling alone.
To keep the peace at home, and because I thought that it would be nice to meet new people, I did book myself on a tour. To punish my family a little, I told them that I was off to find some casual acquaintances because I had needs
.
The advantage of being a little older, for me at least, was that I felt a lot more comfortable in my own skin – I no longer worried overmuch what people thought about me and subscribed to the saying, Your opinion of me is really none of my business.
Now, I do have to say that this was the first time that I travelled on a plane and I actually enjoyed it – I finally got to watch the first season of Downton Abbey on the plane ride over. (I never had time to do this at home.) It was on the plane ride that I first decided that I was quite happy to be on my own – with no one to have to entertain next to me.
I had great fun with the tour company and my fellow passengers as we raced to grab the most sturdy looking abra or the coolest spot on the bus – Just a word about the bus ride – the front top seats are awesome because you can see everything but wear sunscreen and a hat and consider taking something along to cover your arms and legs – the best seats in the house also get the most sun. Sit next to the window if you want to see more of the scenery along the route.
My trip to Dubai got me hooked on travelling and I have since become quite the world-traveler. I want to share the tips and tricks that I have picked up and hopefully inspire you to stop putting off your travel plans until you have someone to travel with. I’ve made the mistakes for you so you won’t have to. It is time to stop being a wallflower and go and explore the world.
Traveling is fun – you get to be someone completely different from the person you are at home. From facing up to the terracotta warriors Xi’An to learning how to tango in Argentina to getting a certificate for eating Mopane Worms in Botswana, there is something freeing
