    TABLE OF CONTENTS

    Introduction

    ––––––––

Congratulations and thank you for downloading The Practice of Gratitude and Mindfulness!

This book is designed to introduce you to the power of gratitude and mindfulness; throughout each chapter in this book, you are going to learn about their values, where these practices come from, and how you can begin using them in your life.

Both gratitude and mindfulness seem to stem from a religious background, though you are certainly not required to be religious in order to engage in these practices. As you will learn about gratitude and mindfulness in this book, you will see more clearly that these are two of the most powerful practices that anyone can engage in. When done properly, they can truly change your life.

Gratitude and mindfulness are not just about theology and religion, however. In fact, scientific studies have actually proven that these two practices truly do have the power to change your brain and, thus, change your life. You will discover how this happens and what you need to do in order to gain these benefits, all of which will be achievable through the use of our 31-day gratitude practice, mindfulness exercises, and a self-reflection journal that will help you move forward and grow as an individual.

The best way for you to use this book is to take your time and work through it patiently and intentionally. If you rush through the book’s contents, you will likely fail to gain the value that it has to offer you. Instead, work through one exercise at a time and truly invest yourself in learning all that each has to offer. This book has been laid out in a way that will seamlessly walk you through each practice, allowing even beginners to follow along. With just a few minutes of practice every single day, you will be able to see a change in your mindset.

The final chapter in this book includes more than 95 journal prompts to help you explore and gain a greater understanding over your life, as well as develop a deeper connection to who you are. I encourage you to use these journal prompts by completing one prompt per day. This will keep you going for about three months, which as you will learn, is approximately how long it takes to gain all of the benefits that these practices have to offer.

If you are ready to begin understanding what gratitude and mindfulness can do for you, how they work, and what you need to do to begin practicing them in your life, now is the time. Remember, take your time and be patient. The more consistent you remain, the more benefits you will gain from your practice. If you find this book to be useful in any way, please don’t hesitate to leave a review. Enjoy!

Chapter 1: Understanding the Value of Gratitude

    ––––––––

Gratitude for the gift of life is the primary wellspring of all religions, the hallmark of mystic, the source of all true art.

    – Joanna Macy

Gratitude is a practice that is highly revered in the self-improvement community for its power to connect us to ourselves and the world around us. If you think about the word gratitude, you likely already know that it means to express gratefulness or thanks towards someone or something.

As you grow to understand the value of gratitude, it is important that you also understand where it comes from and why it is such a highly respected practice. This will support you in recognizing that gratitude is truly a powerful and magnificent act that can change your life.

What Is The Definition of Gratitude?

The most basic definition of gratitude according to the Webster dictionary is, the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return the kindness. Gratitude, at the most basic level, is the act of being thankful for something or someone. You can be grateful for an act that someone has done for you, or grateful for the person in general. There are many other things that you can be grateful for, too—for example, the biology of your body, including your ability to see the world around you or hear the sound of a bird chirping. When we look at things to be grateful for, there is plenty that surrounds us.

According to the Benedictine monk Br. David Steindl-Rast, two virtues belong in the definition of gratitude, which are appreciation, and the recognition that gratitude is gratis – or in other words, free. When it comes to appreciation, the act of gratitude requires you to recognize something that you deem as valuable to you. This should be something that has nothing to do with monetary worth or the type of value that you can trade for. Instead, this is something that has personal value to you. Realizing that something is gratis is important too – it is freely given to you without charge, no strings attached.

When you are grateful for something, you are affirming the value of it. You affirm that you feel and appreciate the good things in the world, acknowledging the benefits that you have received in life. You also admit to understanding that the goodness of what you are receiving exists outside of yourself. This is given to you by other people or the things that you experience in your life. You express gratitude as a way of showing that you recognize this value and that this external value
