CHAPTER 1
Introducing the Blue Heeler
The Blue Heeler may not be a dog breed that appears frequently on lists of the most popular dog breeds, but that just means this breed of dog is a well-kept secret. People who take a Blue Heeler as a pet can attest to the loyalty and friendliness of this breed. Blue Heeler dogs may have been developed to work on farms as herding dogs, but they quickly moved from pastures, to living rooms, where they can be found curled at the feet of their favorite humans today.
Blue Heelers, also called Australian Cattle Dogs, are handsome medium-sized dogs with bright, intelligent, and inquisitive eyes. But it is often the uniquely beautiful coat of the Blue Heeler that attracts people to them. As their name implies, the coat of this dog is bluish gray in color with speckles of brown, black, and white. The perky, over-sized, upright ears give the dog an alert appearance. It’s not just for looks, though. Blue Heelers are excellent and dedicated working dogs that are also tuned in to their surroundings. Nothing gets past the ever-vigil Blue Heeler.
The Blue Heeler is an alert and intelligent dog, who perceives its environment very well!
Blue Heelers are quick, athletic animals that love to be active. They can keep up with the activity and bustle of busy families. If you are looking for a companion for your runs, hikes, or outdoor adventures, look no further than the Blue Heeler. The breed has the stamina to join you on your jobs and hikes. In fact, he will thrive on this activity…and provide you with some good motivation to stay active yourself. At about 40 to 45 pounds (18.14 to 20.41 kg), the Blue Heeler is an ideal size for a companion…not too big and not too small.
Blue Heelers really enjoy people. A highly social breed, the Blue Heeler will bond with its owner. The Blue Heeler is a natural born leader, so owners need to socialize the puppies from an early age to firmly establish themselves as the alpha, so the dog doesn’t think he is in charge. Therefore, the Blue Heeler will thrive with an owner who is devoted to training the pup and has the time, energy, and experience to set the rules and consistently enforce them. The Blue Heeler dog will be happier when the pecking order is clearly established.
The Blue Heeler guide book is designed to provide you with the information you need to determine if the Blue Heeler is the right dog for you, your family, and your lifestyle. After all, you are adding a new member to your family.
This book focuses on including breed-specific information about the Blue Heeler dog. You will learn about the feeding and nutritional requirements of the Blue Heeler, tips for training your new dog, what to look for when researching Blue Heeler breeders, and ways to keep your pup healthy and active well into his golden years.
Along the way, you will gain a unique insight into this intelligent and hard-working breed and you will appreciate the qualities and attributes of the Blue Heeler. You will quickly learn that Blue Heelers may have a bit of wild Dingo still in them, but they are man’s best friend and a loyal and loving companion.
CHAPTER 2
Blue Heeler History
Clues to where and why the Blue Heeler dog was developed can be found in the alternative names of the breed…the Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Heelers, Cattle Dog, and Queensland Heeler. From these, it is clear to see that the Blue Heeler was developed in Australia as a cattle-herding working dog. But the history of the Blue Heeler is a bit more complicated than that. In fact, Blue Heeler history is a subject that is up for much debate.
When Was the Blue Heeler Developed?
The roots of the Blue Heeler dog breed go back almost as far as back as the first European settlers in Australia. The British established the first penal colony in Australia in 1788. Over the next several decades, scientists, naturalists, biologists, and botanists from England and across Europe descended upon the Australian continent to study the strange and diverse wildlife, geology, plant life, and the Aboriginal people. Soon after, colonization of Australia began in earnest.
What Were Blue Heelers Bred For?
The Australian Outback, settlers quickly realized, was prime real estate for cattle ranching. When the ranchers arrived from Europe, they brought with them their trusty herding dogs. While these dogs were excellent herding dogs in England, in the heat and rough terrain of Australia, they faltered. These dogs were simply not suited to the climate and conditions in their new home. It was obvious that a new breed of dog was needed, one with exceptional herding ability, tremendous endurance, but without the heavy coat of the European dogs. Ranchers needed a dog with these traits that they could breed with their own. They found just what they needed right outside their doors.
You can see remnants of its ancestor the Dingo, within the Blue Heeler.
The Blue Heeler’s Dingo Connection
The Dingo, the wild dog of Australia, is a medium-sized dog with a sleek, agile body and upright ears. Dingoes are descended from a common domesticated ancestor, the New Guinea Singing Dog, but live a feral lifestyle in Australia. When ranchers began settling Australia, they found that some Dingoes lived in the wild, while some were companions of the Aboriginal
