Chesapeake Bay Retriever Bible and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers - Mark Manfield

    UK

Introduction to The Chesapeake Bay Retriever

The mightiest of all the retrievers. That is how the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is commonly described. It’s masterful, independent, loyal, and dignified nature makes it a sought-after breed by many. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are one of the few pedigreed breeds which are originally American. They make fantastic gundogs and are exceptional ducking dogs: unsurprising given their origin in Maryland, where they were extremely popular to duck hunting enthusiasts.

Unlike most gundogs, they are more emotionally complex, and therefore their sensitive side will lend them to making an excellent companion in any family. They are one of the most loyal breeds around. As a result, they are a versatile breed and will embrace their duties as a family dog, gundog, guard dog, show dog, or athlete.

The mightiest of all the retrievers: their name describes what they are best at, whether that be retrieving birds for a hunter, or sticks for their owner.

This guide book will hold your hand through the very beginning stages in choosing a new puppy or adopting an adult Chesapeake Bay Retriever, all the way through to saying those final goodbyes to your long-time beloved companion, who will no doubt have become extremely special to you.

Why are Chesapeake Bay Retriever Dogs so Special?

Maryland was the birthplace of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and in 1964, they announced that because the breed was so special, that it would become their state dog. It’s easy to see why they felt like that.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are renowned for being the toughest retriever breeds on earth. They can swim for hours every day without getting cold and are known to jump into icy water with pleasure, breaking the ice with their chest as they go.

Chessies are also one of the few breeds to consistently be awarded the rare title of ‘Dual Champion’ by the American Kennel Club. To qualify for this award, a dog must not only be a champion in the show ring, but also a Field Champion or Herding Champion.

As can be seen, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are loved by many due to their impressive abilities and versatile and tough nature.

    CHAPTER 1

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Origins – Where Did They Come From?

Maryland was the original birthplace of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and it has become such a world-class breed, that in 1964 Maryland was the first state to name a breed of dog as a state symbol. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, then went to name the Chesapeake Bay Retriever as their mascot. A statue of a Chessie was erected at the Retriever Activities Center on campus, and a costumed mascot attends most sporting events.

It is obvious that the state adores the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, but this is understandable given the rich history of the breed, and how fine a breed it has proven itself to be over the years. In this chapter, you will learn all about the origins, history, and uses of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

Chesapeake Bay in Maryland… where it all began

Chesapeake Bay Retriever History and Origins – What Are the Bloodlines?

In 1807, a ship on its way to England ran ashore near Maryland. On board the ship were two Lesser Newfoundland dogs, otherwise known as St. John’s Water Dogs; Canton and Sailor. Canton was a female, large and black, and Sailor was a male, dull red in color. They were both rescued by a crew member, George Law, along with the crew. Canton was adopted by Dr. James Stewart at Sparrow’s Point, and Sailor was rehomed with John Mercer from West River.

They were both used for duck hunting in the area, and soon became renowned for their outstanding skills. They were believed to have bred together, although there is no record of this, and their offspring inherited their striking yellow eyes and talented duck hunting abilities. Further matings were not documented either, apart from some papers suggesting Sailor and Canton’s descendants were bred together at Carroll’s Island Kennels, but over the 70 years that followed, their distinct bloodlines emerged along the shores of Maryland. Many of the early cross breeds were with spaniels and hounds. In the Poultry and Fanciers Association Show in 1887, they were first recognized as the Chesapeake Bay Ducking Dog. Shortly after, the American Kennel Club recognized the breed as the Chesapeake Bay
