CHAPTER 1
Cairn Terrier Origins:
How Did It All Begin?
The history of Scottish Terriers similar to the modern Cairn Terrier, a form or ancestor of which date back hundreds of years, at least to the 1500s. They were referenced in writings, as early as the time of King James I., in the early 1600s. They were originally bred to hunt small animals in the cairns (dens within the rock), in Scotland.
As the name suggests, they are from the Terrier family. The word Terrier originates from the Latin root word ‘terra,’ which means earth. The name is well applied since the purpose of the dog is to work underneath the ground getting rid of rodents and other animals that destroy country living.
Cairn Terriers are not only cute and adorable,
they also have a rich and interesting history.
Where Are Cairn Terriers From? Cairn Terrier History
Except for the German Miniature Schnauzer, all Terrier breeds originate from the British Isles. They fall into two basic categories, the smooth-coated, long-legged dogs of England, and the rough-coated short-legged dogs of Scotland. The Scottish bred Terriers are made up of the Skye Terrier, the Cairn Terrier, the West Highland White Terrier, and the Modern Scottish Terrier. At the beginning of the 1800’s, any one of these breeds were known as Scotch Terriers. Interbreeding was the norm during this time, and any of these breeds could come from one litter without it being unusual. The color of the dog would determine how a pup was classified.
When breeders began to exhibit at dog shows, it was decided that there needed to be more uniformity within the breed. For example, all pups within a litter should be of the same type of their sire and dam, and they should resemble each other.
Most of the early history of the Cairn is focused on the Isle of Skye, if you look at Skye on a map, you will notice that it is a very remote town positioned at the west side of the Highlands. It is also connected to the Inner Hebrides, a land famous for its smooth Scotsmen and its rugged topography, where a strong and bold dog was needed to take control of vermin. The Cairn was the perfect candidate to drive out the vermin from fields, stables, and houses. They were also required to get rid of foxes and badgers.
The history of the Cairn Terrier is complex, but it is believed that Captain Mac Leod of Drynck on the Isle of Skye bred the first strain of Cairn Terrier. The Mac Donald’s of Watermist bred Cairns of brindle and gray colors, and the Mac Kinnons of Kilbride bred the dark brindle, red and cream Cairns. This is how the Cairn Terriers of today began.
The Cairn was originally named the Short-Haired Skye Terrier and on the mainland, he was known as the Tod-hunter.
The Cairn Terrier has been around for a long time, it was one of the first Terrier breeds and it is also one of the most well-known thanks to the character Toto, in The Wizard of Oz.
