I have just read the September/October 2022 edition of SA JAGTER/HUNTER in which the editor, Francois van Emmenes, takes a strong stand against a video doing the rounds on social media. The video shows a young, first-time hunter eating various parts of the animal he has just shot, with the animal’s innards draped over his shoulders and neck. I thought it appropriate to add my voice to the outcry over this, notwithstanding the valuable contributions made by others in the letters section of the same edition. If we are to change the culture of a society or community, it is insufficient to leave the burden of instilling the correct values and behaviour to one or two individuals within the community. As a collective, we must speak out against this type of behaviour.
This video goes to the core of some very important points that we as a community need to address. What we need to address is, firstly, an understanding of respect and what that means for us as hunters. Secondly, how do we show ethical behaviour, and lastly, an understanding of our God-given responsibility to demonstrate what I refer to as “generational leadership”, which goes far beyond our
