Josh: You’ve been there from the beginning and have seen it all. Thanks for putting up with it and sticking with me.

    Chapter 1

Stephanie had a nice, quiet, sheltered life. She enjoyed it for the most part, but there was a side of her that wanted more. Who knew it would take a friend bringing her to a movie one night, to change her life forever?

Hey, Greg said, entering the kitchen.

Morning, Stephanie replied, pouring herself a cup of coffee.

Greg glanced at Stephanie, his arms crossed over his chest. So, we are going to see this movie tonight, right, Steph?

Stephanie blew out a breath, knowing she would have no choice but to go, regardless of the anxiety that filled her. I will not bail on you tonight. I p ... promise. She left the kitchen and sat at her computer.

We'll see. Greg followed her to her computer and kissed her forehead. He turned, headed towards the door, stopped, and then turned around to face Stephanie again. Oh, and by the way, Mr. 4g kicked out his live in. Greg smiled as he raised his eyebrows.

Stephanie giggled, rolling her eyes and shaking her head as she did. Go to work.

Greg shrugged. I'm just saying. He chuckled as he stepped out the door.

Stephanie gazed at the monitor for a moment, and then her fingers began moving across the keyboard.

Her dream of being a published author would have to wait. Right now, she's helping others achieve their dreams by proofreading and editing their manuscripts.

As the afternoon dragged on, she pushed through her tasks without pausing for a break.

Her unwavering dedication to her work won favor with the publishing company, but it left little time for anything else. Stephanie felt fortunate to work from home, and she was grateful for it. She was thankful that her boss kept her on despite her agoraphobia.

The events of a few short years ago had left her with such chronic anxiety that she considered herself lucky to leave her house on most days.

Stephanie's strong work ethic earned her the admiration of her boss. Rather than losing her altogether, the company had her work from home.

Greg and Stephanie were good friends. Once she found the strength to leave her boyfriend, he welcomed her into his apartment with open arms. Greg's actions spoke volumes as he sheltered her, tended to her well-being, and made it his top priority to keep her out of harm's way. Mostly, she enjoyed her life, but there was a restless part of her that longed for something more.

As she glanced at the clock, a heavy sigh escaped her lips. I better get ready.

Greg would be home soon, and lately, at his request, she had been attempting to spend more time outside the house.

With his charming personality and striking good looks, he was indeed a great guy. Standing at six feet, he had the physique of a sports star, with well-defined muscles. His neatly styled brown hair gave him a professional appearance that contradicted his true nature.

He was always sweet to Stephanie, his kindness serving as a lifeline that pulled her out of the darkness of her abusive relationship. Without him, she might not have made it out alive.

After saving her work, she made her way to her room to get ready for the evening.

And she continues to amaze me. Greg smiled. His brown eyes opened wide at the sight of her as she came out of her bedroom door later that evening.

Stephanie looked herself over and then glanced up at Greg. Awe, sweetie, you always know the right thing to say.

    You ready to go then?

Yes, I have maxed out the mascara, lipstick, hairspray combo for one evening. Stephanie chuckled nervously.

Yeah, I was going to say. He moved a finger towards Stephanie's face.

Oh, shut up. Stephanie playfully pushed Greg's hand away.

Side by side, Greg and Stephanie walked out of the apartment, the sound of the door closing behind them.

When they entered the crowded theater, Stephanie blew out a breath. Greg tightened his grip on her hand as they made their way down the aisle.

Maybe it was a good thing we didn't go opening weekend. He glanced around the room.

Now you owe me an apology for bailing. I saved you the headache of not finding a place to sit. Stephanie smirked, finding a nearly empty row and sitting down in a seat.

No, there is no getting out of it. You still owe me, and I will collect. He joined her, sinking into the comfortable chair by her side.

Remind me never to make a bet on whether I can get out of a meeting on time.

Greg's laughter filled the room, echoing off the walls. He put his arm around Stephanie, and she nestled into him, seeking comfort and security.

So, have you given any thought to the vacation idea?

You know I have work. Her voice quivered with a touch of anxiety.

He rubbed her arm. What is it?

These little short trips out I am slowly getting used to, but to be gone from the house for days or weeks. I'm just not ready for it. Stephanie's gaze fell to her lap, where her hands were fidgeting nervously.

Greg put his hand on her cheek, lifting her gaze to meet his. I know you are scared, Steph, but you can't let this fear consume you forever. You are missing out on life.

I think I've had enough excitement for one lifetime.

Steph, what you went through with Jessie was extremely bad. He is a psycho. I am here, and no one is going to hurt you like that ever again.

Stephanie started shaking. Her face went pale, and her breathing became labored.

All right, I'm sorry. Greg took Stephanie’s hand in his. He lightly drew circles in her palm. I picked up the new keyboard you wanted. I also found a set of speakers to hook up. Greg noticed Stephanie’s hand steadied, no longer trembling. His fingers transitioned from her wrist to her forearm, kneading the tense muscles. I figured it would be better than using headphones all the time. Stephanie’s breathing slowed. A rosy hue crept back into her cheeks, signaling the return of color to her face.

Stephanie gave Greg a weak smile. You're so thoughtful.

He brushed her cheek. I have to take care of you.

Greg kissed Stephanie on the forehead and put his arm back around her. She snuggled back into him.

You always do. She laid her arm across his chest.

The lights dimmed, and the movie began.

After the movie, Greg got up from his seat. When he glanced down at Stephanie, she was still sitting, her eyes fixed on the screen. After smiling, he sat back down. He put his arm around her shoulders and leaned in close to her ear. You all right?

Yeah, Stephanie whispered, still staring at the screen.

Greg stood again and laughed. You want to go?

Stephanie peered up at him. Yeah, we can go, sorry. She stood.

He took her by the hand and led her out of the theater.

So, what did you think? Stephanie asked, as she allowed Greg to lead her out of the building.

I liked it. What about you? He let go of her hand to fish in his pocket for his keys.

It was such a fantastic movie. The story was incredible. That blonde guy was really cute, too. Stephanie laughed.

As Greg took her hand, a puzzled expression crossed his face.

Stephanie hadn't complimented a guy's looks since before Jessie came into her life. She had not given one a second glance since. Even after moving in with Greg, it took her nearly a year to gather the courage to step foot outside the house.

He led her to the passenger side of the car and then moved to the driver’s side. If you go for younger guys, I guess.

Stephanie shrugged. He didn't look that young. He has to be in his early thirties.

I don't know. He opened the driver’s side door.

So, you didn't think he was good looking at all?

His brows knitted, and he got into the car.

Stephanie opened the passenger side door and sat in the seat. Come on, you didn't think he was even the slightest bit cute?

Greg rolled his eyes. He's not my type.

I normally can’t get you to stop going on about how hot a guy is. What's wrong?

His nostrils flared as he sighed. Nothing.

Greg, if I didn't know you better, I would think you were jealous. She gave a lopsided grin.

    That would be ridiculous.

    Stephanie laughed.

Ridiculous. He pressed his lips together.

Throughout the drive home, Stephanie couldn't contain her excitement as she gushed about every detail of the movie and the charming guy in it. Greg drove, his mind filled with worry about Stephanie's recent interest, but eventually brushed it off. Once they reached their building, they rode the elevator to their floor and then entered their apartment.

He gave her a gentle hug. I'm headed to bed, sweetie. An early morning is in my immediate future.

All right, I'm going to work a little before I turn in.

He headed toward his bedroom door. Don't stay up too late.

    Yes, dad. Stephanie snickered.

He glanced up at the ceiling. Kids. A smile filled his face when he briefly turned his head and then he made his way through his bedroom door.

As Stephanie sat down in front of her computer, she could hear the soft hum of the fans and feel the coolness of the keyboard beneath her fingertips. Opening the internet browser, she couldn't wait to delve into her investigation of the actor who had sparked her curiosity. She began clicking through sites, devouring every interview she could find. Every word she read made her more and more fascinated. Something stirred in her that had been dormant for a very long time. Before she knew it, Greg was coming out his bedroom door fully rested and dressed for the day ahead.

You stayed up all night? Greg crossed the floor to the kitchen.

Looks that way. Stephanie stared at her screen, still immersed in her research.

With a curious glance towards Stephanie, he left the kitchen and casually strolled towards her. What are you working on? His eyes narrowed as he stared at the screen, and he couldn't help but shake his head in disbelief.

Stephanie continued reading, engrossed in the words on the page.

Someone’s got a little crush? He delicately pinched his finger and thumb together, creating a vivid visual.

Her eyes were glued to the screen, captivated by the words that danced across her monitor.

Steph? Greg asked a little louder.

The only movement she made was the gentle blinking of her eyes and the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest.

He raised his voice as he continued. Well, I have fabulous news; 4g and I are going to run away together and join a cult to save the Slippery Dicks in Brazil.

She sniffled. That's cool. Stephanie peered up at Greg, her eyes filled with curiosity. Wait, what? Bewilderment was clear on her face as she tried to make sense of the situation.

Greg laughed. Wow, someone is going a little obsessive.

No, it's not even like that. I was just curious about who he is.

Greg kissed Stephanie on the forehead. It’s okay, I’ll still love you. I'll bring home a bucket and some extra paper towel to catch your drool. His face lit up with a mischievous grin.

Get outta here. Stephanie chuckled, pushing Greg away.

It's good to see you smile.

It's good to feel like smiling again. Her eyes twinkled.

Greg paused to admire the radiant glow that Stephanie emitted before strolling out the door.

Stephanie looked at a few more photos and wondered why she was so worked up over this guy.

Oh Steph, what's wrong with you? She sighed and then stood up, heading to her bedroom.

With each passing day, Stephanie found herself increasingly enchanted by the guy she had only seen on the big screen and researched on the internet. Her time on the computer was spent discovering new things about and seeing new pictures of him. To avoid the already overwhelming amount of teasing she received from Greg, she took to her discoveries while he was at work or after he had gone to bed. This was a brand new and intense feeling for her, both terrifying and exhilarating. The more information she gathered, the more she could feel changes happening within herself.

Steph? I made us some dinner. You awake? Greg knocked, then opened Stephanie's door.

She tried to focus on his face, though still half asleep. You spoil me. She pushed down the covers and got out of bed.

I know. I'm too good for you. Greg laughed, moving to the kitchen.

Stephanie joined Greg at the table.

So, I'm thinking about getting a tattoo, Stephanie said, spooning food onto her plate.

A what? Greg choked on a mouthful of food. After taking a drink, he continued. Whatever for?

I just want one right here. Stephanie pointed to her hand between her index finger and thumb.

    What of?

Stephanie got up from the table and walked to the counter. She picked up a piece of paper. This. she handed it to Greg.

Greg took the paper, studied it for a moment, and gave it back to Stephanie. This has to do with that movie. That guy. Stephanie, you have never talked about a tattoo before, and now you have one all picked out.

Stephanie crumpled the paper in her hand. Her gaze drifted to the floor.

You need to get a handle on this obsession of yours. It isn’t healthy.

Her brow furrowed, and she swallowed hard. It isn't like that. Yeah, I’ll admit he’s cute, but it's not about that. I have been reading things he has said, and he makes sense. He’s really smart.

Honey, I get it. Ever since Jessie, you have been struggling. He did a number on you. I just don't want to see you get all wrapped up in this and—

Struggling? Greg, I question who Jessie is. I question who I am. I question life. He didn't just hurt me, he destroyed me.

He stood up and touched Stephanie's cheek. All the more reason to be careful.

She put her hand over Greg's, then glanced down at the floor. As she shifted her focus back to him, she removed his hand from her face, yet maintained a hold of it.

It's really not like that. I know I'll never meet him. The things he says, they help me. I am grateful for the wisdom from his words. It's like how you always say the right thing at the right time to move me in the right direction.

Greg sat back down at the table. All right, I trust you. How about we finish up and go out for dessert?

Stephanie sat down and smiled. See, the right thing.

Greg gave her a light-hearted smile.

With a smile on her face, Stephanie scooped up a spoonful of her creamy ice cream. The mall is a little more crowded than normal.

Yeah, you okay? You want to leave?

No, I want to go see what's going on.

Greg handed the money to the guy behind the counter. You what? With a tilt of his head, Greg's brow furrowed in a puzzled expression.

Stephanie rarely liked crowds. Greg could only bring her into crowded places when they visited a friend's club, where she clung to him and avoided the bustling areas.

They wandered off, following the sound of foot traffic, until they stumbled upon a stage set up in the distance. The once spacious floor had transformed into a crowded sea of bodies seated in chairs.

    What the...?

Hello there. A movie promo pack can be purchased here. From there, you can take it to be signed by our panel, which will arrive shortly. An eager saleswoman interrupted Greg and handed him a package. That will be $74.79, sir.

Huh? Oh, right. Greg handed some bills to the saleswoman.

With a curious expression, he inspected the bundle in his hands. Once he realized what it was, he tightly shut his eyes and silently cursed. Uh Steph, I think maybe we should go.

Stephanie cast a curious glance at him. Why?

Before Greg could answer, a man entered the stage and spoke. Stephanie’s attention was averted toward the stage.

Hello. It's nice to see you all here tonight. I appreciate how patient you all have been these last few weeks. I know all of you have been waiting a long time for this and are eager to get this underway.

The crowd erupted in a deafening roar of excitement.

Greg kept his eyes fixed on Stephanie, mirroring her every step as she made her way towards the stage. As more people joined the man on stage, the crowd erupted into a chorus of cheers.

Stephanie’s face lit up. Greg look, it's him!

Greg sighed. Steph, I really don't think this is going to help you. Let's just go. Greg pointed towards the entrance, showing the direction they had come from.

Okay, we will call you in rows to come up for your autographs. Please stay seated until your row is called.

The first row stood as the people were shown up on the stage.

Come on! Stephanie darted to a row of chairs.

Greg groaned as he took a seat next to Stephanie. I thought it wasn't a big deal for you?

What's the harm in getting an autograph? Stephanie pouted.

Not the eyes. Oh, for crying out loud, Steph.

Stephanie's blue eyes looked down with a hint of sorrow. Her bottom lip stuck out, and she sighed dramatically.

Greg rubbed the back of his neck. Oh, all right.

Thank you. Stephanie's face lit up with an exuberant smile, and she planted a gentle kiss on Greg's cheek.

Stephanie bounced in her seat as she eagerly waited for her row to be called. Her vision was locked onto the happenings as the other people, mostly young girls, had their turns to meet the guy she couldn't seem to stop thinking about. The one she constantly searched for any information about. The guy whom, as Greg accurately put it, she obsessed over since she first saw him on the big screen.

She let out a giggle as her row was finally called.

Greg’s expression soured, and he rolled his eyes.

In mere moments, she would come face to face with her gorgeous preoccupation. Stephanie climbed the stairs to the stage, following the line in front of her. Greg trailed after her. From behind the line, she glanced towards her infatuation, desperately hoping to catch a glimpse of his face. As she got closer, she saw him. She stared as she felt the butterfly sensations engulf her. Just like a movie scene, he turned and glanced in her direction. She bit her bottom lip when he smiled at her. Feeling overwhelmed, she ducked back behind the line in front of her. Stephanie was both afraid and thrilled. Her heart was pounding so loud she feared everyone could hear it. Curiosity got the best of her and she had to look again. Stephanie leaned over, but this time, as she peered over, his gaze was fixed on her. She didn't know what to do, so she waved. His smiled broadened, and he waved back.

With a swift motion, Greg spun Stephanie around, their eyes locking. Are you losing your mind? Did you actually just wave at him? Greg handed Stephanie the pile he was holding. Here, go get your autograph from wonder boy. He stalked off, leaving behind an air of tension and frustration.

Taking the pile, Stephanie turned back around. Only one person stood between Stephanie and him now. He signed the person’s poster, then stretched his arms upward, arching his back. Teasing Stephanie, his black buttoned shirt rose as he stretched, offering a tantalizing glimpse of his waistline. His dark blonde hair was flawlessly tucked into a black hat. His blue eyes looked tired, but had a friendly expression. He stood up. Removing his hat, he ran his fingers through his hair and then put his hat on the table. Stephanie saw his black leather jacket draped over the back of his chair. She thought he was going to leave when he crossed the stage, but instead of leaving, he walked around the table, turned, and faced her.

Hi, he said, sporting a flirty smile, his eyes filled with mischief.

    Hi. Stephanie swallowed.

Did you like the movie? He took the bundle from Stephanie.

Yeah, it was really great. Stephanie's smile was etched on her face, revealing her genuine happiness.

That's good. He signed a picture.

With a satisfied smile, he finished writing and passed the pile back to Stephanie. His hand brushed against hers, causing a surge of tingling sensations to course through her body. A sudden chill ran down her back, causing her to tremble, and her cell phone slipped from her grasp, clattering onto the floor.

He stooped and retrieved her phone. He winked as he handed it back to her. Here wouldn’t want to lose this.

Her cheeks flushed a rosy shade, giving away her embarrassment. Thanks.

No worries. It's nice to meet you. I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name. He gazed at her expectantly.

Stephanie. She tucked a stray hair behind her ear.

Stephanie. It’s a beautiful name. His finger ran down her forearm.

She shuddered. Th ... thank you.

Her face flushed. He smiled again, which only made Stephanie’s grin broaden. They shared a silent moment as they stared into each other’s eyes.

She bit her lip. Would you mind if ... Could I ... hug you?

Yeah. He took a step towards Stephanie.

He wrapped his arms around her. She felt the strength in his arms, though his touch was tender. A calming peace washed over her as she felt him pull her closer to him. He smelled wonderful as she laid her face on his chest. He gave her a gentle squeeze and then took a step back.

Well, I better... He pointed backstage.

Oh yeah, of course. Stephanie cleared her throat.

Stephanie turned, a shiver running down her spine as she felt the intensity of Nick's gaze. She took two steps forward and then realized Greg wasn't with her. She scanned the area, her eyes locked onto him, standing right where he had purchased the packet. Stephanie looked down at the picture. She could see the words Love Nick written in bold black sharpie. As Stephanie turned back around, she felt a sudden rush of adrenaline. Nick's smile widened as he waved goodbye, and he strolled through the curtain.

Stephanie turned back towards Greg and made her way over to him. His laughter filled the air as she approached him.

You know, that was disgustingly cute to watch.

Shut up. Stephanie laughed, shaking her head. There is no way I can go home and sleep now I am w—

Hot and bothered over meeting your super hunky wonder boy, Nick! Greg teased, interrupting Stephanie.

Her smile faded. I was going to say wired.

You realize you made a total fool of yourself.

Her jaw clenched and her hand planted on her hip. Well, he smiled. He even got up to greet me.

Steph, he was humoring you because you were tripping over yourself. At least he was nice about it, though. I have to give him that.

She paled. Oh, I was terrible, wasn't I? She cupped her face with her hands.

It's okay, kid. Let's go to Tino's. Greg put his arm around Stephanie, leading her toward the exit.

She nodded. You always know how to make me feel better.

The staff greeted them when they walked in.

Shawn was the owner of Tino's and a close friend of Stephanie's.

He was about Stephanie's age, and like her, he didn't look it. He was a little under six feet tall, and thin. His golden blonde hair while shorter in the back was longer on the top and usually fell into his deep blue eyes.

He saw the pair as they entered and he made his way through the crowd to them.

Hey, Steph. Greg. How are my two-favorite people?

Hey, Shawn. Greg wandered over and gave Shawn a fist bump.

Hi, Shawn. Stephanie gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I'm going to get a drink. She headed to the bar.

Uh-oh ... What's wrong with her? Shawn’s brows furrowed as he watched Stephanie go.

Greg laughed and shook his head.

Stephanie got to the bar and was greeted by the bartender.

Hello sexy, what will it be tonight?

Hey, Roger, give me a shot of to kill ya and a lemon ice chaser.

There was a brief pause as Roger stood there, his eyes locked with Stephanie's, silently asking her for an explanation. You don’t normally drink like that. You okay Steph?

Yeah, just drowning out a stupid I pulled at the mall. Stephanie moaned.

Baby doll, anything you do is all good. Roger set Stephanie’s drinks on the bar in front of her.

    Thanks. Stephanie laughed.

I'd have to agree with that.

Startled, Stephanie turned around quickly when she heard a voice coming from behind her. As she turned around, her heart skipped a beat at the sight of Nick standing there. He sat beside her so suddenly that she didn't have time to react.

Are you stalking me now? Nick chuckled as he waggled his eyebrows.

Stephanie laughed as she tossed her hair. I don't know. I come here all the time. Maybe it is you stalking me?

And what if I am? Nick winked and smiled.

Stephanie couldn't believe her ears - was he actually flirting with her? Was he interested in seeing her again?

She thought of their hug, not an hour ago at the mall, and smiled.

Who's that with Steph? Shawn motioned towards the bar.

Greg groaned. You have to be kidding me. That's the wonder boy, she was drooling over.

Man, when you going to tell her you love her?

Greg shook his head. That ship has sailed, my friend.

Nick, seriously, what are you doing here?

I always try to check out the nightlife in the places I go. I was told this was it, and I'm here.

Roger glanced between the pair and then sized up Nick. Can I get ya something?

A beer and another round for the lady.

Roger nodded, grabbing two bottles and coming back to pour Stephanie’s shot in front of them. So, Steph, where's Greg tonight? He set the drinks down in front of them.

Uh, he's over with Shawn. She motioned towards them.

How long have you two been together? Nick asked.

Greg and I? She shook her head. No, we aren't together.

Good to know. Nick winked, taking a drink from his beer.

Hey Greg, what are you drinking tonight? Roger asked as Greg walked up.

Greg stood behind Stephanie. I think I'll stick with beer tonight, Rog.

You got it, man. Roger stepped away to get Greg's beer.

Roger returned and gave Greg his beer. Here ya are.

    Thanks.

Greg motioned towards Nick Hey Rog, you card this one? He was the only one that laughed.

Greg, don't be an ass. Stephanie pursed her lips and rolled her eyes.

Nah, it's all right. That was hilarious. Nick held out his hand. You want to dance, Steph?

She placed her hand inside Nick’s. Sure.

Greg did a double take, and almost spit out his mouthful of beer as they strolled off. She doesn't dance. She doesn't go near the dance floor. He thought to himself.

Stephanie and Nick found an opening on the dance floor and danced.

So, I think Greg might have a little crush on you.

Stephanie shook her head. Not quite. I'm not his type.

    How are you so sure?

I'm actually part of the opposite team. Stephanie chuckled.

Nick gave Stephanie a look of confusion. Stephanie's laughter subsided as she flashed a smile. He's gay.

Oh, well, I guess that settles that then. Nick smiled, pulling Stephanie closer.

Roger and Greg looked over at Stephanie and Nick.

    Man, that has to suck.

Huh? What's that? Greg glanced at Roger.

Having to watch the girl you love fall for someone else. Roger shook his head.

Yeah. Greg sighed, turning back towards Stephanie and Nick.

Why didn't you ever tell her?

Funny story actually ... She thinks I'm gay. Greg chuckled.

What? Why the hell does she think that?

Well, this is right after that mess with Jessie. She needed a place to go, and she would not stay with me because of the whole me being a guy thing. So, I told her it wasn't an issue for me. I meant I respected her and wouldn't push.; she, however, took it to mean I wasn't interested. I never told her the truth. It never seemed to be important. It has been the two of us for a while now. She wasn't ever interested in dating after Jessie messed her up so bad. I had her to myself, so it worked; until I took her to see wonder boy's movie. Greg chuckled at first, then glanced over at Stephanie, let out a sigh, and took a drink of his beer.

I want to apologize for acting stupid at the mall earlier.

No need. I thought it was cute. Nick chuckled.

Stephanie sighed and shook her head. I made a fool of myself.

Nick stopped dancing and gazed into Stephanie's eyes. He smiled and tenderly stroked her cheek with his hand. Nick took Stephanie's hand and led her to a table, and they sat down together.

    Are you attracted to me?

Stephanie's face flushed, and she smiled shyly.

I'll take that as a yes. You shouldn't have to apologize for it. Sometimes you are just drawn to someone. I know I felt it when I saw you.
