Prologue

Each one of us has our own share of mysterious experiences. While we are sure of what we have experienced, we are often at loss to describe it to others in its entirety, nor can we explain why such an incident actually took place.

People who practice advanced stages of Yoga and meditation are no exception. They do undergo mysterious experiences at different stages of their journey. Some of these experiences are anticipated and well documented in ancient Yoga texts such as Yoga Sutra of Patanjali. But there are many others that don’t find analogues in these texts and the practitioner goes through a phase of confusion and bewilderment.

One of the most sought after experiences of Yoga and meditation is what is known as samadhi. Though this state or rather a series of progressive states is fairly well defined in Yoga Sutra, same cannot be said about myriads of other ‘samadhi like’ states that are talked about by the propagators of many Yoga variants. This creates lot of confusion and leaves ample scope for misuse of the entire system which has otherwise lot to offer to mankind.

This book discusses some of the interesting mysterious experiences in the form of first person narratives. The intention is not to eulogize such experiences, but to show that such things are possible though not all are described in the Yoga texts.

This book also tries to provide simple reasoning based analysis of the situations, backed by ancient texts, other related works, and words of well known Yogis.

1. My early childhood experience

Though not very religious, we did have a practice of praying together each evening in the prayer room with the whole family gathered around a burning oil lamp. As part of the prayer, each member used to sing a devotional song and the other members used to join chorus. This used to go on for more than half hour.

I was quite small at that time – I mean when this incident took place. I may be around five. I too used to sing sometimes or join the elders. But my favorite was to stare the flame of the oil lamp without batting an eye lid. I used to do it – don’t know how long!. Strangely, I could keep the eyes open without much strain for quite some time.

One day a strange thing happened. As I kept staring at the flame, I saw the flame getting bigger and bigger, brighter and brighter. Gradually, I could see darkness around the flame and the other members of the family who were sitting close to me and around the lamp, moving farther and farther away from the flame and dissolving in to the darkness. I could still hear the song they were singing, as if from a great distance.

Then I saw a dark tunnel in front of me. The already grown bright flame seemed to be moving into the tunnel. Soon the flame started moving into the tunnel faster and faster at a mind blowing speed and I felt as if it is dragging me along. I could not see anyone around me, nor the sound of the song they were singing. There was deafening silence. Probably it lasted for a few seconds – that is what I thought.

All of a sudden, I felt that someone abruptly dropped me from a great height and I was startled. Slowly I could see the flame returning to its normal shape, the darkness around it disappearing. Gradually I started hearing faint sounds of others singing. And by and by, I started
