Chapter one: What is Mental Toughness
What is mental toughness? Mental toughness is defined as the measure of the resilience and confidence that one has that is going to be part of predicting that person’s success in sports, education, and in the workplace.
Mental toughness first came around with the training that is done for sports due to the attributes that enable someone to become a better athlete so that they can deal with the difficult training and competitive situations that are going to come about from playing sports without that person losing their confidence.
As time has gone on, the term has begun to be used not only by those who work with athletes but by business leaders as well.
Quite often, the term mental toughness is used to describe a set of positive attributes that are going to assist someone in coping with situations that are difficult to deal with. Coaches and many sports commentators use it as a way to talk about an athlete’s mental state as they overcome a difficult circumstance in order to succeed.
But, over the past fifteen years, researchers have tried to come up with a scientific definition for mental toughness so that criteria could be established as a way to measure mental toughness in order for analysis and comparisons to be made. Three different teams have been able to come up with a definition for mental toughness.
Researchers Jones, Hanton, and Connaughton
According to researchers Jones, Hanton and Connaughton, Mental toughness is having the natural or developed psychological edge that enables you to generally cope better than your opponents with the many demands (competition, training, lifestyle) that a sport places on a performer, specifically to be more consistent and better than your opponents in remaining determined, focused, confident, and in control under pressure.
––––––––
Researchers Clough and Earle
According to researchers Clough and Earle, they decided that mental toughness was a personality trait that consisted of several components.
These components were: commitment, confidence, control and challenge. If you had each of these personality traits then you had the mental toughness trait.
Researchers Gucciardi, Gordon, and Dimmock
According to researchers Gucciardi, Gordon and Dimmock, Mental toughness in Australian Football is a collection of values, attitudes, behaviors, and emotions that enable you to persevere and overcome any obstacle, adversity, or pressure experienced, but also to maintain concentration and motivation when things are going well to consistently achieve your goals.
There are a few psychologists that are arguing that there are different definitions when it comes to mental toughness and how it is developed.
Some attributes of those who are mentally tough are going to be different from those that are not developing their mental toughness.
One of the differences is that if you are a male or female, your mental toughness is going to be different from your significant other due to your gender.
It is also going to depend on if you are someone who has to work with others every day or if you work by yourself and barely have contact with others.
In studies that have been done specifically for sports and the mental toughness of athletes, it shows that there is not a common framework between sports such as cricket and soccer, but the definition for mental toughness that was given in the Jones study as well as the Gucciardi study are close to the actual definition of what mental toughness is.
A lot of the studies that focus on sports are going to be using the model that was provided by Researcher Clough.
As a result there are samples from the athletes that are studied so that links can be shown between the mental toughness of the athlete along with how they cope with the stress they are under, their psychological skills, how they perform, and their emotional reactivity.
A study that was published shows that athletes are going to follow the four C’s model which are commitment, confidence, control and challenge.
The study also shows that the junior colleagues in businesses are not going to be as tough as the senior managers.
Researchers are currently in an active debate about if mental toughness is a characteristic that is developed or if it is something that comes from your genetics.
Two studies that have been done show that there is a foundational process that occurs when a person begins developing their mental toughness throughout their life.
For example, when a study was done on soccer players, their parents, and their coaches, the parents are going to give a generalized form of mental toughness that the coaches are going to continue to build on so that the athlete is mentally tough for their sport.
In a similar study, the mental toughness of a person is going to be developed first through their development of a tough attitude, and for athletes this is going to come through focus and a strong belief in themselves while they are practicing and training for their games and competitions.
It is easier to understand if you equate mental toughness to things such as hardiness or resilience.
The term resilience is often times used incorrectly to describe mental toughness, but there are psychologists that have defined resilience as the ability to positively adapt to a stressful situation.
Hardiness is a similar construct to mental toughness, though, and it is usually a personality trait that is constructed and seen throughout someone’s life.
This is going to be different from the concept of mental toughness that was provided by Researchers Jones and Gucciardi.
It was these authors who thought that mental toughness made someone unstable and the development of mental toughness was going to fluctuate overtime therefore varying from each person and the situation that they were placed in.
This definition plagues the use of the term for mental toughness and should mental toughness only exist as a valid construct then it is going to depend on maladaptive.
However, evidence has been found that supports the concept of mental toughness being derived from behaviors that are over trained.
So what can be stated about mental toughness is that mental toughness can be learned and practiced through sports as well as through training from help of coaches. In addition, mental toughness can be learned through life experiences whenever a person faces obstacles and challenges.
It is important to state that athletes have an advantage over your everyday common person when it comes to learning and practicing mental toughness.
By participating in tough sports like American Football and boxing, athletes develop an attitude of winning, as well as confidence, commitment and bravery.
However, if a person does not participate in a tough sport or does not put himself in a position to be challenged, then how will mental toughness ever be developed?
The only and best way to learn, develop and practice mental toughness is by simply doing things that will make you UNCOMFORTABLE and simply CHALLENGE YOU!
Chapter two: How to Develop Mental Toughness
Even if you do not believe that you have mental toughness, you are going to be able to build mental toughness.
In having mental toughness, you are going to be empowered and you will then be able to bounce back from the bad quicker and you are going to be stronger than you were before.
Move straight to acceptance: whenever you are wanting a specific outcome from a situation, you are going to need to accept when you do not get the outcome that you wanted.
When you allow the different outcome to overtake you, you set yourself back and you create a resistance that is going to slow you down in the long run.
Therefore, even if you do not like what has happened, you are going to have to accept that it happened and move on.
Reframe the situation: it is human nature to be upset whenever things do not go the way that you want them to.
But, with mental toughness you are going to be able to persevere even though things are going the exact opposite of how you are wanting them to go.
One way to overcome allowing situations to bring you down is to look at the obstacle that you are facing and think of how you are going to be able to prove yourself in overcoming that obstacle.
Shifting to solution mode: rather than allowing the difficult situation that you did not plan for to overtake you and make it
