    Introduction

In the summer of 2017, I got a job at a café/paddleboard rental shop on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe called Waterman’s Landing. It is a family-owned business that supports the sport of stand-up paddleboarding and healthy living. After working all summer and only paddleboarding a couple of times, I decided to enter my first SUP race. I created a training plan and dedicated a lot more time out on the water, working on improving my technique, strength, stamina, and endurance. In the process, I started to feel more balanced, connected with nature, and mindful of my surroundings. Not only did I lose weight, but I made friends in the paddling community, tapped into the resources I had available at Waterman’s Landing, and came away from the water happier and healthier.

I wrote a HowExpert book about my experience titled Stand Up Paddle Board Racing for Beginners: A Quick Guide on Training for Your First Stand Up Paddleboarding Competition. In that book, I share an in-depth look at how I got into paddleboarding and my personal experiences about training for a race.

It snowed all winter in Lake Tahoe and then as spring rolled around, I started jonesing to get back out on the water again. I started paddling several times a week and trying to remember what I had learned the previous season. This prompted me to want to write another book about every term I’ve ever come across associated with stand-up paddleboarding. As I started training for my first (and second) race of the season, I began recording every term I’ve learned in the past year of SUP. I’ve tried to be as inclusive as I can, but also feel like every time I go out on the water I think of a new term (today it was sunglasses, croakies, and helmet). Therefore, this is a constantly evolving glossary just like the sport of stand-up paddleboarding itself. Enjoy.
