About this ebook

I recently wrote a book in honour of my beloved Boerboel and Cross Boerboel dogs. It is a book that highlights a series of events which transformed me from a girl who didnt like dogs to a lady whose heart has been filled with unconditional love for them. It is an amazing story of love in its truest and most sincere form.

Boerboels are intelligent, self-assured dogs bred to have extremely
strong guarding instincts, and it is the only breed in the world bred
with only one purpose, to guard and protect his family. The book
highlights how cross breeding and inter breeding has led to many
Boerboels in South Africa becoming prone to getting elbow and hip
dysplasia. Three of my dogs were diagnosed with hip dysplasia with
two having been put to sleep as a result of this condition.
By writing this book I hope to create awareness in many ways. Firstly,
to let people know the love and joy that animals bring into our lives
and show them how rewarding it can be. Secondly, to raise awareness
about buying Boerboels from registered breeders and lastly, to put
more focus on the beautiful South African Boerboel itself, in an effort
to preserve the breed.
The book highlights love, loyalty, happiness, sadness and tells of my
experiences over the years with my 5 fur kids. This is a book that will
inspire people to never give up but to keep on trying.

It’s 2 a.m.; I could not sleep… What’s with the loud music? Living in a flat could be great at times and equally awful sometimes. New tenants had moved two flats away from ours and they were party animals. They often had outrageous parties over weekends and entertained in the week till the early hours of the morning. No one knew what they did for a living, because no one cared. They were rude and arrogant people. I didn’t mind over weekends, but that day I had work. I would need to be up in a few hours. ‘Some people can be so damn inconsiderate,’ I mumbled to myself.

‘Go back to sleep,’ mumbled Sanj.

‘Oh yes. I’ll just pull the covers over me and fall right back to sleep,’ I thought sarcastically. I was so different compared to most people; I was not a sound sleeper and would wake up at the slightest noise, or in this case, to music blaring down the passage. I could not go back to sleep and switched on the telly, but there was nothing interesting to watch. I tried falling back to sleep but to no avail; eventually, there was quietness, and just when I started feeling sleepy, buzz, buzz, buzz, my alarm clock rang. Sanj and I had been living in our flat in Benoni for two long years now and we did not like it much. We longed for a spacious place to stay in with a big garden and maybe a pool to splash around in the hot summer days. Sanj also had a longing to get a dog. I did not support him with that idea, as I was not a canine person. I had never owned a dog before and was clueless on how to care for one. As time went on, we started looking at random newspapers and consulted with estate agents and started the process of looking for our new home.

The house hunting proved to be a tiresome process that yielded no results even after months of effort. We would sometimes think to ourselves that maybe staying at the flat wasn’t so awful, maybe we’d learn to live with the noisy taxis and neighbours from hell, but in our hearts, we knew that we wanted a better place to live in. The episode the night before was the final straw for me. It was a biting cold morning in July, the winter of 2003, that we received a call from an estate agent in Terenure, Kempton Park, and she wanted us to come and view a house in the evening with her. It was something we dreaded, because we had seen several houses but nothing appealed to us, and why would this time be any different?

It was a thirty-minute drive from where we stayed and closer to my work. I was absorbed with my work and the cold was not helping. The temperature stood at just seven degrees Celsius and would get much colder at night. I was so not in the mood, but she called again, twice in the day, so we decided to take the bull by the horns and went to see what was on offer. Going by the description she had given us on the phone, it felt like our dream house, however, we knew that sometimes what people described when compared to what one would see in person differed a lot, so we didn’t have any high expectations for the house. As we turned in to Veldblom Street, we noticed how exquisite all the houses looked and it was only when we pulled in at 19 Veldbom Street that we were totally in awe of the house. It was breathtaking, exactly what we were looking for but up until that day had never found.

‘Was this real?’ I kept asking Sanj.

The estate agent asked us to get out of the car and have a look around and see if we liked it.

‘We love it!’ I replied, and I knew we would put in an offer that night to buy it. We looked around and saw that the long driveway led to a double garage, the house was enveloped by a beautiful landscaped garden, there was a sparkling blue pool, a koi pond,
