Silly Animal Stories for Kids - Denis Hayes

    Spike the Spider’s First Adventure

Spike the Spider was bored even though he lived in a good position in a large bathroom. There he was in a top corner with a wonderful view, yet he was discontented, complaining that not many friends came to visit him.

Spiders only have spider friends anyway, not insect friends. Insects that do visit usually end up eaten so they tend to stay away if they can.

He made sure he stayed high enough to avoid the human sweeping that happened occasionally. This knocked down dust, cobwebs and the webs of spiders that had been too lazy to climb higher. So he felt secure.

He was also well fed because there were times when steam rose up clouding the air which meant that juicy flies couldn’t see so well and flew pell mell into Spike’s web.

Spike trapped enough so that he didn’t have to go down to the Spidermarket very often.

He lived well. So what was the problem?

Well Spike wanted adventure. He wanted to travel. He wanted excitement. So one day he abseiled down onto the big white bath below. He cut himself loose and crawled around exploring this new place. Unfortunately it seemed more boring than where he lived. Sure enough it was all bright and shiny white with a few bottles spread around but this was hardly living dangerously. So Spike went over the top of a slope and rested on the side of a steep hill. All he could see was more of the same thing.

Feeling a bit tired after all this exercise he decided to look around later so he luxuriously stretched out his legs, gave a yawn showing a mouth big enough to terrify even soldier ants and went to sleep.

Spike slowly woke up feeling that somehow things had changed. Water was running, steam was rising and the air was getting hotter.

All of a sudden Spike heard a scream from somewhere and a human voice shouted, Aaah! There's a huge spider in the bath.

Spike had learned from an old uncle to stay away from humans as they generally had a bad attitude towards spiders. He scuttled sideways but ran into a stream of water rushing out of a tap. He was scooped up and rushed pell mell down into the bath.

Spike picked up speed, was twisted this way and that, then spun round and round before being flushed down the plug hole. Spike dropped like a stone, seemingly for ages, then roared along on the top of a wave. At last on joining a bigger tunnel with a slower water flow Spike managed to clamber out onto a ledge.

Weee Heee - yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!! shouted a breathless Spike, man oh man, that was living!

Spike completely forgot that he was a spider and jumped up and down like a jack in the box in his excitement.

I have got to have more of that, he said, and made his way back along the tunnel wall, reached his turn off point which had no more water coming out and climbed back up to the start. When he reached the spot where he thought he would emerge back into the bath he found it blocked off which puzzled him for a while. He scratched behind one of his eyes with one of his legs wondering what he should do next.

He did not have to wait long.

Suddenly with a loud pop, the plug was removed, water gushed down on Spike and off he went again on his wild ride. This time Spike shouted, laughed, turned head over heels and got up to all sorts of tricks. Back he went again but unfortunately there were no more water thrills. Disappointed Spike climbed back up to his web, re-lived his experiences while eating a few juicy ants and fell sound asleep.
