About this ebook

Where the Today Dream Begins was hatched from the first book, When Growing Up Is Magic. The surface was barely scratched. There was so much more!

Where the Today Dream Begins is a compilation of whimsical poems ranging in themes from nature, quirky people, and growing-up experiences to character, inspiration, and the seasons.

Where the Today Dream Begins is a journey of the imagination into a world we do not always see. It moves the reader from the world of what is to the possibilities of what if?

Where the Today Dream Begins is a means for family members to share a story or fantasy together and thereby experience relational connection. And that’s the magic!

This book helps answer two quandaries: How can young people be persuaded about the pleasure of reading? And how young people can get older family members to appreciate their today dreams.

See if you agree…

    Chapter 1

    Where the Today Dream Begins

    Where the Today Dream Begins

It was a normal sort of day,

    One rather dull and ordinary.

Not much to smile or laugh about,

    Not really much to say.

I went out to my garden, hoping

    I’d see something cheerful.

But what I saw was something sent

To make my numb heart tearful.

A little web had caught a fly,

But what then filled my eyes:

A breeze that spun that fly so fast—

    A pinwheel-fly surprise!

Uncommon days like this can last

    From something momentary.

My today dream began that day,

    Now nothing’s ordinary!

    A Raven Story

A restless raven in an oak tree,

Cawed and gurgled forth a call.

    Like he was scolding

    Me for holding

Earth so tight, I’d never fall.

I answered back, "I have no wings.

If I come up, I’ll only fall."

    Down came that bird.

    I think he heard

    Me protest his incessant call.

He strutted toward me, pulled a feather,

    Placing it upon my feet.

    He called out loudly,

    Then flew proudly.

    No more taunting, no conceit.

He often meets me at that place

And shares a story in his prose.

    My thoughts imagine

    Him a caption.

I wave his feather as he goes.

    Anteater Regret

We were happy to bring home an anteater.

We thought it a clever idea-r.

    Now ants aren’t invading

    Our cupboards and trash,

And our home has become ant free-er.

We’re now sorry we brought home an aunt eater.

We thought it a clever idea-r.

    The family is over;

    Aunt Freda is gone,

And we do not know how to retrieve her!

A Pelican, Stork, and a Crane

A pelican, stork, and a crane

Were eating ice cream in the rain.

    They slurped it like soup,

    From a sweet, sticky goop

Until all that remained was a stain.

A pelican, crane, and a stork

Were eating ice cream with a fork.
