Silly Ghost Stories for Kids - Denis Hayes

    The Absent Minded Ghost.

Getting it all together had a very serious meaning for Mr. Absent Mind. He had been beheaded hundreds of years ago. He had eventually found his head thrown in a basket and carried it around with him tucked underneath his arm. He really did need to keep it all together.

Sometimes he put his head down because it got heavy after a while and he often needed to use two hands. This wasn’t necessarily a problem except that it frequently was. He was absent minded so he used to forget where he had put it.

This caused huge arguments with his head.

Where the devil are you? his body would ask.

Where the devil are you? his head would say.

‘‘How do I know where you are? said the body, you have the eyes, I don't."

Well I can’t see you so you’ve gone somewhere, where have you gone? said the head.

    ‘‘I don't know, do I? I can't see can I? I keep telling you, snarled the body."

‘‘You put me down, didn't you, so why not just pick me up again?" snorted his head.

‘‘I would if I knew where you were because then you could tell me where I was." And so the argument went on.

Eventually they always somehow managed to get together with the body angrily bundling the head up roughly into his armpit. Then the head would retaliate and close its eyes so that the body banged into a sharp corner.

This could go on forever and the other ghosts in the sanctuary started to give them a wide berth. This was unfortunate as they had often assisted the head in finding the body or vice versa. Without their help coming together was going to be more difficult.

One day the Necrodominator, the ghost boss, told him at very short notice that one of the top performers had chained herself up so tight that she couldn’t escape. No one could help her out either. So Absent Mind had to take her place and go haunting. It was no fun being a ghost if you didn’t scare people half to death. Oh dear, Absent Mind got in such a tizzy. He fumbled and jumbled until the boss got angry and hooted at him.

Absent shot off. Well at least his body did. His head was left behind!

    5.jpg

Oi, you dimwit, shouted the head, wait for me. We are supposed to do this together aren't we?

Oh for goodness sake, come on then, hurry up, I'll wait here for you, said the body, come on.

And how precisely do you suppose I can do that? exclaimed his head.

Wow, yeah, you haven't got any legs have you? he giggled.

And you obviously haven't got any brains, snapped his head, get back here now!

‘‘Well I would but I don’t know where here is, do I?" mumbled the body, as he stumbled over a small mouselike apparition who bit him firmly on the ankle.

He leaped up in pain and banged his neck on the ceiling.

The head smiled. He could see his body now and shouted at him to keep coming forwards. This was a bit naughty as he could see that the body would bash into things that he would normally just slide through if he had his head with him but he didn’t.

So he smashed into everything and everyone. He was pushed, pulled and punched by other ghosts who lost patience with his clumsiness. The head guided him in, deliberately badly.

Finally the body got hold of the head, very roughly. He was bruised, disheveled and angry.

Off they went down the corridor to the big hall, arguing, accusing and bickering not realizing at first that tour guides and tourists were looking at them in amazement.

Have you ever seen a ghost having a row with itself? Well neither had they.

The body took hold of the head, turned it to face his hollow neck and shouted, I suppose you think you’re funny? Look at me when I’m talking to you.

‘‘I am, said the head, and it's not a good idea."

    Why?

Because you can't see where we are going.

Crash, they fell over, splat on the ground. The head rolled away, screaming in annoyance, calling the body all sorts of bad names.

The tourists cleared a space around them, calling to the body and giving directions to meet up with the head.

They eventually effected a reunion between body and head with the body dusting himself down and flattening the ruffled hair on the head. The cheeks of the head were pink with embarrassment, not the usual grey deathly pallor.

The head and body bowed stiffly to the crowd and did a very unghost like shuffling retreat back down the corridor.

The Necrodominator was furious until he heard the cheers and applause from the great hall.

    The humans had loved it.

Highfields Tower was becoming famous for its eccentric ghosts.

The Crying Lady and The Chained Woman.

The young lady was upset, she had tears in her eyes and huge sobs racked her body. Actually that was why she was called the Crying Lady.

The other ghosts felt sorry for her and would loved to have heard her story but she never stopped crying long enough for her to tell it. That just seemed to make her even more upset.

All sorts of rumours were spread about her the favourite being that she was left in the lurch by a heartless lover and she died of grief.

    6.jpg

One apparition who seemed doomed to walk about forever dragging chains behind her showed no sympathy at all. She felt the girl was lucky and had got off lightly. She herself had to drag her chains for all eternity because she had been too successful with men and had married a few too many.

Unfortunately all at the same time.

    7.jpg

This would not have merited chains but when she realized that the police were investigating her she resorted to pushing the surplus husbands into the river to get rid of them.

This worked well enough at first until one husband who was a sailor, was also a strong swimmer. He dragged himself out of the water and went looking for her, along with a
