    CHAPTER ONE

T he car found its way into a beautiful compound, an architectural masterpiece of a building which served as the head office of the Audsac Multi-Products Manufacturing Industry. David wheeled towards the car park, sped a little, and marched his brake abruptly. The car bounced for a while before settling down. He grabbed his brief case and mobile phone, and then took a careful look at the inside of the car, probably to make sure he had not forgotten anything. Briskly, he walked into the receptionist office, exchanged pleasantries with the office staff, who were busy putting finishing touches to their work and dashed into the Chief Executive’s Office. Audsac was surprised to see him. He glanced at his watch and smiled.

    David then got seated.

David one thing I so much love and appreciates about you is your ability to keep to time and promise. Keep it up, it will be useful to you in future, Audsac replied.

    Thank you sir, replied David.

How is your hospital going on, I hope you are getting more and good clients?

Yes! The hospital site is excellently nice and it has really made me to be so much known in the city by people and government.

Audsac smiled. You see, if you can remember, I told you that where a hospital is sited is not an issue of whether people will come or not. What matters most is the kind of services you as a medical doctor could be able to provide to people when they come, said Audsac.

    David nodded and smiled.

Well I invited you to inform you that I have gotten the money you paid into my account as your one year rent for my building you hired for your hospital business. You have been a nice tenant but that notwithstanding, I want to tell you that I have increased my rent.

    David listened attentively.

You pay annually one hundred thousand naira. By next year you will be paying sixty thousand naira in addition to what you have been paying in the past. I want you to go home and think about it, if it is good for you, then you can inform me in a week time, if it is not, get me informed so that I will know when you will pack out so I can give out the house to another tenant.

Thank you sir, David said and promised to visit him in the house and have a talk with him in two days time.

    It is alright, replied Audsac.

    Then David walked away.

In the school, the students were all sited when Caroline the lecturer walked into the class. She greeted the students and they responded. She then introduced herself to the students as their new lecturer who will be lecturing them on the Basic Principle of Food and Nutrition.

You are welcome madam, they responded.

From this course you are going to learn the type of nutrients we get from food, what they are made up of and what they contribute to our physical and physiological well beings. An individual needs to choose food that will provide all the nutrient in the right amount and that is what we call balance diet. It is known that plant proteins are incomplete but can be combined with another plant protein lacking in a different amino acid to give a complete protein. What I mean is things like the combination of beans and maize cooked together. So a plant protein can be consumed together with animal protein to give a complete protein. Such combination is like pap and a glass of milk.

    The students listened attentively.

You see, cholesterol found in fatty food such as egg yolk, egg salad cream and others can become dangerous to our health if their consumption is not controlled, because they narrow the blood vessels thereby making blood flow to be difficult resulting in a condition known as arthrosclerosis which could lead to heart attack, said the lecturer.

Most students especially those who has lost good and loved one to heart attack startled.

From your previous lectures from other lecturers handling you in other courses, I am sure you are aware that carbohydrate is needed in large quantity but excessive intake result in obesity and dental caries. When they are not enough in the body, protein is made to produce energy thereby causing wasting of the muscles. In children this condition leads to protein energy malnutrition (PEM) which manifest as marasmas in adult it causes fatigue and wasting, said the lecturer.

    No student said a word.

Vitamins and mineral element are called microelements but their deficiencies in the body could cause serious problems. Excessive intake of some of these nutrients can also have a negative effect on the body. Excess of selenium in the body causes loss of hair and brittle nails because it replaces sulphur in action. Excess of sodium chloride in form of salt leads to high blood pressure which results in hypertension when not controlled. All these show that an individual who is in an active job must follow a good dietary pattern to ensure optimum health. We all know that when there is ill-health, efficiency at work is lowered and productivity is also lowered, but if workers are in good health and they eat the right amount of the right food then, they will perform better and if workers perform better the level of efficiency at work improves, if efficiency is high production is increased thereby making the organization to grow. Am I making myself clear to you?

    Yes madam, they replied.

You see, in an recent research carried out by Sodexho on the career and well being of workers, it was found that employees expect that employers to cater for their feeding by providing a staff canteen within the work premises. This feeding could be subsidized. Well, what I have told you are the summary of what you are going to learn from this cause. I want you to open your heart, pay attention to my lecture, ask questions if need be, by this you are bound to acquire good knowledge and receive useful information on the basic principle of food and nutrition. Do you hear me? she asked.

    Yes madam, replied the students.

Good day students? said the lecturer.

Good day madam, the students replied.

Caroline packed her books and left the class.

One evening, David and Caroline were having their dinner when David told her about the intention of his landlord to increase his house rent and Caroline smiled.

That should not worry you, you have to go ahead and pay him. He is a nice man just as you too has been to the family right from Russia where both of you met and become family friends.

    David nodded without a word.

Have you told him you have started to put up your own structure for a hospital?

No mum, but do I need to tell him.

Well I thought maybe you did that is why he decided to increase his own house rent.

He is not aware and will not until I am through with the project, said David.

It is nice decision… so how far have the work gone? I hope the contractor is doing his best?

Oh the construction is almost through. In fact, by ending of next year, we will be at the new site.

That is good news! So you see why you have to pay your land lord his new rent since you are not going to leave there too soon.

    Exactly! muttered David.

Listen David, God will bless you, keep you and guide you and make you to prosper in your life.

    Amen mum.

But remember God’s condition of blessing you. Be true to your profession and service you render to people who are your clients. Don’t lie or cheat in other to make fortune from your profession. Obey the ethics of the profession, and God’s ethics to the profession. But God’s ethics first… thou shall not use his profession to commit sin like adultery, fornication, killing, abuse of person, cheating and bring shame to your family and nation. You shall not be involved in abortion or sales of babies, if you must sell, follow the adoption rule approved by the government. Do you hear me?

Yes mum… but why are you always stressing about abortion and sales of babies?

I hate abortion; I have a convincing prove that it does nothing good to women but have an end product that is coated with pains, sorrows and regrets. If you get loose of yourself such that you allowed yourself to be pregnant for a man knowingly or unknowingly then you should be responsible for your misfortune and not the baby. You don’t need to abort because you might end up killing the savior of the world, your own savior in old age, savior of human society, communities and nation, great inventors and other things. And if you are responsible for why God’s programme should be delayed for a while, you will account for those who died, Caroline explained.

    David was touched.

Remember that a child who disobey his parents especially her mother do not have a better days of his life. So do not disobey me! Our scripture says that children should honour their parents. This honouring involves honouring our words too, as your parents, being obedient to our words. Abortion is evil, nothing attract curses like it, here and after here, so be warned my son.

    Thank you mum, David said.

So David, when are you bringing to me the girl you said you want to marry? I need to see her and talk with her, replied Caroline.

David smiled. Mum, any day she is around in my office I will take her to the house to see you, he promised.

Caroline was excited. So what is her name?

    Cynthia, said David.

    It is alright! Caroline replied.

David finished his dinner and walked back to his room to have a bed rest for the night.

The following day, Audsac meet with Heads of units in his company to talk about proposal somebody made for his company concerning the establishing of staff canteen within the work premises. Many in the meeting aired their views about the proposal.

What are you advantages of having staff canteen within the work premises? asked a lady in the meeting, to the people who brought the proposal her name was Mrs. Brown.

Little time is spent on lunch, foods served in industrial canteen are mainly balanced diet, which are planned for the week and are reviewed periodically to give variety. If workers are well fed according to a researcher they perform better, said the manager of Car-Rich fast food Restaurant.

    Mrs. Brown nodded.

There is an adage that said, a better fed worker, work better is that true? asked the restaurant manager.

    Audsac nodded.

A worker who is well fed stays healthy, is highly efficient at work and this automatically results in high productivity.

Wait young man! a male staff interrupted.

    The manager listened attentively.

Can you tell us the disadvantages of not having a staff canteen within the work premises? the man asked the manager.

"Well, it encourages the consumption of junk foods such as fatty fried foods, ice creams, chips and highly processed food. These foods I have mentioned contain loads of calories which can cause great obesity and they are also high in sodium which causes high blood pressure.

Audsac startled and heaved a sigh. His wife and daughter like such food and instantly he decided that he is going to stop them from taking such food once he gets home.

Individuals can easily consume contaminated food. Time is wasted in finding out what and where to eat. It makes workers to want to be away from work especially when they are overworked. There is risk of accident and mishaps. More money is spent than necessary in eating out especially when fast food joints are patronized. And lastly, much of carbonated water such as coca-cola, Pepsi and many other are consumed which does not give any nutritional value to the body, the manager added.

    There was silence.

    Any comments? Audsac asked.

Many people began to talk, some from the way they spoke shows that they were convinced by the manager while some words proved that they still have doubt in them. But at the end, Audsac called for a secret vote of the staff at the meeting, when the result was counted the manager view and proposal won the support of the majority at the meeting. The job was there and then offered to his company.

Well Mrs. Brown you take up all the things that will make the canteen project work well and then report back to me, Audsac said.

    Yes sir, replied the woman.

The work assigned to you will start up by tomorrow. Do you hear me?

Yes sir, but I would have preferred it start by next tomorrow because I want to take tomorrow off.

Why? the Deputy Executive Director asked.

Azuka my daughter got an admission to the university and I want to take her to school. The father travelled but he assigned his driver an official vehicle for the journey. If I extend it beyond tomorrow means I have to hire a car that will take us to Enugu. Said Mrs. Brown.

It is okay! You have tomorrow off for that, Audsac said.

Thank you sir, the woman replied.

    Then the meeting ended.

An hour later, Caroline was in her office when her office manager walked in and greeted her. He had his file. He kept it on the table before his boss and took a seat. Caroline stopped what she was doing.

So how did the meeting go? she asked.

    Our proposal passed.

Oh! That is great! Congratulation manager.

Thank you madam, said the manager.

Now that we have gotten a wider outlet to sell our food, I have to recruit more hands into the business and then teach them how to make good food.

Are we going to be cooking at our new site?

No! all our cooking will be in one spot then from that spot, the food will be distributed to other spots, that will make us to maintain our quality and quantity and save waste, she replied.

    The manager nodded.

    Once again, congratulation, she said.

Thank you, the manager replied and left.

The following day, Mrs. Brown and Azuka left for Enugu. Their journey ended in less than three hours. Infact, it was exactly three hours by the time they were driving into the university gate. Azuka was a bit nervous. She was resuming school as a new student at the university and she had been filled with both anxiety and trepidation. She wondered how university life would be. Her mother had sat beside her at the back of her father’s official car. Mrs. Brown had been lecturing her on how to behave on campus.

Azuka, I have a daughter in this school but she is not in the campus if not I would have introduced you to her. She went to Lagos to see my younger brother. Her name is Cynthia and she is a good girl, said the driver.

    Azuka nodded without a word.

It is only a corpse that will hear where a child is been advised without saying a word. If you take your mother’s words of advice it will be well with you. It is only stubborn fly that follows corpse to its grave. Do you hear me?

    Yes sir, replied Azuka.

I told my daughter the day I brought her here, to choose her friends carefully; it is the same thing I am telling you now as your father’s driver and as a father. Don’t move with people of questionable characters because they will only get you into trouble. You must learn to always be content with what you have. You must not be greedy. Do you hear what I have said?

    Yes sir, Azuka replied.

Dress properly and not like the prostitutes in Otigba junction at night. Avoid the unnecessary distractions the campus will present to you. Do not believe in the fake life students live. Be real! Whatever you make out of this university campus we have brought you into today will affect you for the rest of your life so Azuka be wise so that you will not cry had I known, the driver added.

    Azuka felt touched.

Thank you sir, Mrs. Brown thanked the driver. Azuka what you just received is one of the numerous lectures you have received since the past six months from your dad and I.

But mum I have always told you that I am of age. I can take care of myself, Azuka replied.

At what age? asked the driver?

    Eighteen years of course.

The driver smiled. Well Azuka, your age has nothing to do with what we are talking about. Listen and listen well, you must not be envious of others. Envy hurls one to greed and then it throws you into the pit of damnation. Your mum and I know you have grown to take care of yourself but you have not grown above God.

    Azuka smiled mischievously. You’re right!

Of cause I know that, said the mother.

If I am right then it means you need your parents counseling at all time, because God has made them your caretaker, the driver added.

Mrs. Brown continued, Always don’t forget to be close to God, do your prayer and join any of the campus fellowship. God will be with you and guide you. God will let his light to shine upon you if only you keep his words, obey your parents and lecturer.

I will mum, thank you, Azuka said impatiently.

It was good when the car finally stopped in front of the hostel Azuka had been allocated accommodation on campus. At least it would terminate the never ending lectures on morals from her mother and her father’s driver. She felt she had really heard enough. Two nights ago her mother’s friend, Maureen had talked to her on the need of being a good girl and coming out of the university in flying colours. For over an hour, Azuka had endured the sermon and Maureen never tired of preaching to her.

When Mrs. Brown and the driver left Azuka walked into her room and got settled down. She had seven other room mates who
