About this ebook

Two books have been combined, Scriptures that Have Inspired Me and Given Me Comfort and Some Criteria For the Development of Character. This book is written for family and friends hoping they will be further inspired as I am. I am inspired by the magnanimity (the highest descriptive word in the English language) of all Scriptures. The second part is related to the Development of Character. A written definition of a lady cannot be done. The complete definition of ones character cannot be done, but I have developed 67 subjects that will lead one to be of good character. The concept in the two parts of this book has made our lives as perfect as perfect can be!

    Dedication

This book is written for my family and my friends hoping they will be further inspired by these Scriptures as I am.

I am inspired by the magnanimity (The word with the highest description in the English language) of all the Scriptures, but these come to mind at this particular time.

    Introduction

This has been a hazardous review. Through the years I have picked out my favorite scriptures. Each time after an interval when I read them again they were always inadequate and I had to add more scriptures.

All of God’s Word is my favorite. I have had much Biblical experience since I made selections the first time.

Those of you who are critics or negatives, I ask you to do it yourself and let me be blessed by your work. Many people have done this.

I did this for my family and all my friends and other reviewers:

Since it is mostly selected scriptures I promise a blessing to all who read it.

If you are down, it will lift you.

If you feel weak it will strengthen you.

If you feel you are in the dark, it will give you light.

If you feel unloved, it will give you love.

If your courage seems weak it will give you valor.

If you lack truth, it will lead you to God.

If you feel alone, remember the Holy Spirit is within you.

If you say, Who am I? read God’s Word and learn that you are a little lower than the angels.

If you feel depressed, relax, that word is not in the Bible. It is man made since it is not from above.

If you feel lost in life, remember God is everywhere to lead you.

If you don’t feel like a man or woman, don’t insult God because you are.

If you feel isolated from the world, call any of my 24 grandchildren and great - grandchildren and you will be cured.

As a start make a list of your favorite Scriptures and then as you study and think about God’s Word add to your list. All the Scriptures unless otherwise noted are from the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible, Fifth Improved Edition, King James Version, 2007 B.B. Kirkbride Bible Co.

    The Bible: The

    Best Book Ever

The moon and the stars get their light from the sun. Our firmament of learning and light is from the Bible. (God’s Word) It is the only Holy book for Christians. It is the only book filled with history of the lives of holy men. It is the only book where the author proves power over life or death. It is truth, free of falsehood. It is the only Divine Light. The Bible is the only blessed book and the only book that speaks. To have more we must go to the other side of the universe into Heaven. The concept of the time to be born and the time to die is established when we began to live; we began to die.

Scriptures For Life As Selected In The Books Of The Bible.Old Testament

    Genesis

    1:1 The Creation

The origin of the universe and the human race.

    Exodus

    The Deliverance

The deliverance and the beginning of Israel on the way to the Promised Land.

By God’s power God’s people emerged from slavery out of Egypt. Man’s reconciliation with God was established through a mediator and covenant.

    3:2,4 The Call of Moses

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed…And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

    3:14, 15 I AM THAT I AM

"And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations."

The water from the Rock 17:6,

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. (The Rock was Christ; the Water was the Living Water.) And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. (I Corinthians 10:4)

    31:3 The Workmen

And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. (John 5:46)

    NUMBERS

Unbelief and murmuring bars the entrance to abundant life. The 40 Years of wandering was in the wilderness. The whole generation was doomed due to disbelief!

14:29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me.

The book of Numbers is summarized in the Psalms, and in Hebrews.

Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest. (Psalms 95:10,11)

Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest. (Hebrews 3:8-11)

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. (John 5:46) This was a warning from Jesus to believe Moses and also Him.

    Deuteronomy

(Has been called the Fifth Book of Moses)

    Deuteronomy 32:15-20

[15] But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

[16] They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.

[17] They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

[18] Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

[19] And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.

[20] And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

Read Matthew Henry’s Commentary the oldest and best Bible commentary since 1706. Spurgeon, Hobbs, Truett, etc recommended it. My copy was printed in April, 2002. This is a direct quote concerning Israel in Deuteronomy 32:15-20. It describes us in 2012.

This is a story of a dying nation when they became rich, prosperous, obese, and deserted God: (Matthew Henry)

"Security and sensuality, pride and insolence, and the other common abuses of plenty and prosperity, verse 15. These people were called Jeshurun-an upright people (so some), a seeing people, so others: but they soon lost the reputation of their knowledge and of their righteousness; for, being well-fed. They waxed fat, and grew thick, that is, they indulged themselves in all manner of luxury and gratifications of their appetites, as if they had nothing to do but to make provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts of it. They grew fat, that is, they grew big and unwieldy, unmindful of business, and unfit for it; dull and stupid, careless and senseless; and this was the effect of their plenty. (Thus the prosperity of fools destroys them, Proverbs 1:32.) Yet this was not the worst of it. They kicked; they grew proud and insolent, and lifted up the heel even against God himself. If God rebuked them, either by his prophets or by his providence, they kicked against the goad, (A rod, used to stimulate them to move.) as an untamed heifer, or a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke, and in their rage persecuted the prophets, and flew in the face of providence itself. And thus he forsook God that made him (not paying due respect to his Creator, nor answering the ends of his creation), and put an intolerable contempt upon the rock of his salvation, as if he were not indebted to him for any past favours, nor had any dependence upon him for the future. Those that make a god of themselves and a god of their bellies, in pride and wantonness, and cannot bear to be told of it, certainly thereby forsake God and show how lightly they esteem him."

Deuteronomy is repetition of the laws given to Israel since the laws were given in Leviticus.

Key Thought: The divine requirement of obedience

10:12-13 "And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?"

    God’s great requirement of obedience.

15:10 Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.

4:5-8 "Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?"

    God teaches us. Obedience

    6:4-12 Our to be testimony

6:4-5 is the Shema. The most quoted verses in the Old Testament. It is also found in Deuteronomy 11:13-21 and Numbers: 15:37-41.

(Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:4-5 in Mark 12:28-30)

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates."

"And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage."

The Song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:1-43)

The verse to remember in military combat:

33:27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

    Joshua

    (Shows good leadership with success.)

Joshua replaced Moses as leader. Moses led Israel out of Egypt; Joshua led Israel into Canaan, the Promised Land. Joshua is the Old Testament name for Jesus. Joshua means the "Lord is Salvation." Joshua saved God’s people from the Canaanites and Jesus saves them from their sins. Joshua was the general of the armies. His power is thought to have come from the Lord of Hosts. Joshua is also along with Christ (Hebrews 2:10) captain of our salvation and a commander of the people.

The conquest of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua in the battle of life.

1:8,9 "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

23:14 God never fails us. (Joshua’s farewell address: 23:1-16; 24:1-27)

"And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof."

    24:15 The Miller Motto:

"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

    Judges

One has to be inspired by Deborah the prophetess and judge.

Judges 4:4,8,9 "And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go. And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh."

The song of Deborah in Chapter 5 is inspirational and concludes with 5:31 So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

God Himself called Gideon, a military hero and spiritual leader, the mighty man of valor. He delivered God’s people from the Midianites. He was out numbered 13:1. His spiritual life was sustained by his regular worship. The sword of the LORD and of Gideon. (Judges 7:20) I have noticed if I miss Sunday church I am not quite as good a person that week.

Samson was a hero of great physical strength and moral weakness who lived in the dark times of God’s people. "In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes."(Judges 17:6, and 21:25) His weakness was a pagan woman. He broke God’s laws by intermarrying with one. (14:15) Returning from a prostitute he was almost captured by the Philistines. (16:1,3) One of the most amazing feats was when Samson caught 300 foxes, tied their tails together, set them on fire and sent them to the Philistines fields of corn and grapes as a revenge of Samson.

Out of his weakness he was made strong by the LORD. (Judges 16:29-30) (Hebrews 11:34) Delilah discovered his weakness. He was blinded. He prayed to the LORD and pulled down the pillar of the temple of Dagon killing himself and thousands of the enemy.

    Ruth

A beautiful story for the spiritual guidance of a congregation in which Ruth appears as ancestress of David and Jesus Christ.

    2:12 Trust in the LORD

The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.

    II Chronicles

The record of David, Solomon and the Kings of Judah up to the time of the captivity

7:3 And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. (Also noted in 5:13 and I Chronicles 16:41)

7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (A Key verse)

16:9 "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars."

    20:21 More Military verses

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.

31:21 What we do, do it with all our heart and prosper:

And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered.

    Job

    Where is wisdom?

The Book of Job is not connected with any other Biblical book and stands alone. Job is a book of divine morals, followed by the Psalms, a book of devotion, and Proverbs, a book of practical things. It is thought that Job lived before Moses. It is great primitive theology. It gives the glorious attributes and perfection of God, His unsearchable wisdom, His irresistible power, inconceivable glory, inflexible justice, and His incontestable Creator of the world. Job makes powerful the obligations upon us to serve, submit, and trust in the LORD and ruler of moral good and evil, virtue and vice showing the beauty of ones had of the other. Job shows the provocation and malice of Hell. The patience of Job is noted in James 5:11. The moral of the story seems to be that the righteous has many afflictions, but when the LORD delivers them out of the trial of faith they will be found to praise, honor, and glory. The patience of Job and the vanity of human philosophy with divine wisdom is revealed in the sufferer

28:7,8,13,17,19,20,28 This reveals the source of wisdom and understanding.

"There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture’s eye hath not seen:..The lion’s whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it…Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living…The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold…The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold…Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?..And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding." (Job 28:28) (See also Deuteronomy 4:6 and Proverbs 1:7)

    Psalms

1:2, 3 Our son, Joe, III tombstone euology. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The Psalms are a history of Israel and an abstract of both Testaments. It is filled with spiritual songs taught by the Holy Spirit. It kindles the soul of man. It conveys a divine life with power and holy warmth. What ever is working in us holy desire, hope, sorrow or joy we may find words for it in the Psalms. We can sing the Psalms with spirit and understanding.

A collection of 150 spiritual songs, poems, and prayers used through thousands of years by the church.

37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

37:25 "I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread."

46:1-2, 10 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble…Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea…Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. In order to learn about God one must be still and Listen". It is God speaking. His Word will not pass through loud drums, screaming ecstasy, jumping up and down, or riding a cowboy horse, etc. One must be quiet and listen to God to hear God.

119:143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.

121:7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

136:1-26 God’s mercy is seen 26 times. Read it. God’s mercy is also noted in 106:1, 118:1-4, 28.

[16] To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.

[17] To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:

[18] And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:

[19] Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever:

[20] And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever:

[21] And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever:
