    Preface

    A Story of Two Latinos

On a beautiful late spring afternoon, twenty five years ago, two young Latino men graduated from the same high school. They were very much alike, these two young Latinos. Both grew up in the same working class barrio, both were good students, and they both were the first in their family to attend college. Like many Latino youth, they were filled with hope, optimism and desire to achieve their American Dream.

Recently, these two Latinos returned to their high school for their 25th reunion.

They were still very much alike. Both married their college sweethearts. Both had three beautiful children. And both, it turned out, had majored in business and went to work in the financial services industry.

But there was one major difference. One of these Latinos was depressed, deeply in debt and lived in constant fear of losing his job. The other owned his own business, was worth millions, and had plenty of free time to spend with his family, travel and volunteer in his community.

    WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE?

Have you ever wondered, as I have, what makes such a dramatic difference in people’s lives? Why do some live their Dreams while others struggle just to survive? It isn’t always talent, ambition or hard work. It isn’t that one person wants to live their Dream and the other doesn’t.

The difference lies in whether a person dedicates their life to chasing success or living their life purpose!

The difference lies in how closely you listen to your inner voice, and instead of just seeking a high paying job or prestigious career, you discover your purpose in life and harness that power to make your Dreams come true. Believe it or not, when you know your purpose in life and answer your Calling you don’t have to chase success… success chases you!

    THE #1 SECRET OF THE

MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD

And that is why I wrote this book; to share an ancient secret that can lead you to the achievement of your American Dream. You see, while many Latinos have talent, ambition, and work hard to achieve their dreams, too many forget their purpose in life, and instead of following their hearts, lose their soul chasing after success.

They do not understand a fundamental universal law; the more you chase success, the more it runs away. This is the great secret… What you pursue will elude you, but what you become you will attract! Knowing this secret, and how to harness its awesome power, is the key not only to a rich and fulfilling life, but also the key to making all your dreams come true.

    YOUR LIFE PURPOSE

Deep inside you is a seed, planted by God, when you were created. This is the seed of your potential and the source of your Dreams. When the time is ripe and you are ready, this seed will sprout and call you to realize its potential, and live your American Dream.

This seed, like any other seed, is fragile and needs to be loved and nurtured in order to grow. With the proper attention and care this seed will blossom and bear fruit in the form of your Dream come true. Your mission in life is to cultivate this seed until it grows to fruition and realizes its full potential. You nourish this seed and fulfill your purpose in life not by pursuing fame, fortune or accolades, but by following your heart.

ONLY YOU CAN MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE

Think of your deepest desire right now. The one that only you and God know about. You know the one. This is the seed of your potential calling and only you can answer. As you read this book, and complete the exercises at the end of each chapter, you will embark on a journey to fulfill that Dream.

I have laid out a path for you to follow, but only you can take the steps which will lead you home, to the realization of your deepest desire: love, peace and happiness. Your journey may, at times, be difficult. Very few even have the courage to take this journey, but then again, only a select few live their Dreams. On your journey, if you ever find yourself lonely, discouraged or in fear, remember this: You were born for a purpose. What you seek, is seeking you!

    Chapter 1

    One Dream—Two Worlds

    Is Your Ladder of Success

    Leaning Against the Wrong Wall?

"For what does it profit a man, if he is to gain the

whole world, and lose his soul?"

    Mathew 16:26

    Do you have a Dream?

What does it mean to you? Are you living it?

As children we dream about how our life will be when we grow up. We dream about adventure, romance, riches and happiness. Some of us even dream about helping others and making a difference in the world. Childhood dreams never truly die; they lie within you, seeking one day to become realized.

If you are like most Americans today, the American Dream means living in a home of your own, having a successful career or perhaps being in business for yourself. For others the American Dream means achieving fame, amassing wealth, or accumulating an abundance of material possessions.

For me, the American Dream means having the freedom to control my own destiny. Living the Dream means I have discovered my purpose in life and am free to pursue my vision of happiness, wherever that road may lead me. Although the American Dream can mean different things to different people, one thing is certain:

For Latinos in America, achieving the American Dream is meaningless if it doesn’t nurture the Latin Soul!

The soul is that part of you that seeks meaning and purpose and a connection with something greater than yourself.

Isn’t it your connection after all, to your faith, family and culture that nurtures your Latin soul and gives meaning to your life? Who are you, as a Latino, without your familia, native culture and religious traditions? And for us, family doesn’t mean just the nuclear family comprised of a man, a woman and 2.3 children. No, for Latinos family means the extended family of abuelos, tios, tias and of course primos with whom you grew up and created mischief when you were young. For Latinos, without these relationships life feels empty, void of the bonds that give our lives meaning.

Is it any wonder why Latino youth, when the opportunity arises to attend college in a distant city or accept a job across country, are so reluctant to leave home?

This is the challenge for Latinos in America today… We Live In Two Worlds!

On the one hand we grow up in a world where faith, family and "frijoles" are values we hold dear and on the other hand we live in a society where independence, notoriety and achievement are esteemed above all else.

As a Latino, it is a bit of a culture shock to learn that in one world, when you turn 18 you are expected to move out of your home and survive on your own and then when you get old, you are encouraged to
