ABOUT THE AUTHOR
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This book would not have happened without the support of a few important people, places, and playgrounds in my life.
The permanent members of my Village – Charon, Sharon, Shiryl and Darlene - without your unconditional love and support I would not be who I am today. You each make me a better woman and parent.
TeAndre, thank you for reading and enjoying this project from the very beginning. You told me that my story would help people.
To two of my mentors, Lucius and Phyllis, I thank you both for helping me to hold it together when life got difficult.
Alice, you polished my words. Thank you for embracing this project.
Takoma Park, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA - the first place that provided me with peace and opportunity.
Finally, a special thanks to Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. The hope and education that you gave my mother in the mid-1970’s changed our lives. Tri-C remained a safe space for the rest of her life.
FOREWORD
My name is Lucius Lewis and Alisa Smedley is both a mentee and friend. I have watched her grow over the past 30 years. Lisa has a rare combination of drive and determination, while having the compassion to help others. She is very focused and determined to produce results. As I have watched her over the years, it has been a delight to see her personal motivation reach new levels. This book will provide valuable lessons about how any of us can overcome the tough times.
It has been very interesting to watch Lisa’s journey! No matter what the circumstances, she always pressed on. She has certainly been an inspiration to me and has helped me to grow in so many areas myself.
Embracing Your Story will share the deeply personal and sometimes painful stories from her life. You will hear about the spiritual and educational foundation that Lisa received from her mother, and the creativity and entrepreneurship learned from her father.
Through it all, Lisa has managed to stay humble and grounded. I could go on and on about Lisa and what she means to me! I just want to be there to provide assistance to her in any way that I can. I also want to remind her that there is no limit to the heights that she can reach. May you enjoy getting to know Alisa Smedley as I have over the years. I challenge you to embrace your own story in the end.

INTRODUCTION
Each of us has a story to tell. In this book I will share ten important scenes from my life. Some are sad or funny, while others are hopeful or hopeless. I am always brutally honest and will show the connection between those situations that we are born into, those that we choose and how they all come together to shape us. One definition of embrace is to accept completely. I used to distance myself from my past. Once I learned to embrace my story, my life honestly took a new direction. I thank you for joining me on this journey!
I was formed and prepared for life by my past. I have survived the worst of it. An amazing thing happens when you overcome a tough season…you get stronger, more confident, better able to handle the next tough season. My hardships, my scars, and my stories have made me strong.
I wrote this book to share how experiences, even the difficult ones, can be used to help us build better lives. It takes hard work and often many, many years...but it is possible to build a great life out of difficult beginnings. Once you escape the hurt and learn the lessons, it is then that you can go for it. With the right plan, the next chapter of your life can be great! I am a witness.
My hope with Embracing Your Story is that you will find a blueprint to follow if you have had a difficult life. The stories shared here are real. Each chapter of the book offers some wisdom. After each story I share Lessons Learned and ask a
