    CHAPTER I

It was a beautiful, warm autumn day in Southeast Wisconsin. On the steps leading into the registration office was Dino, at the University of Wisconsin-Park Side. (Located between Racine and Kenosha.) Dino was a little nervous and scared. He was a alone today because he had to register for his freshman classes alphabetically. His friends from high school were to register the next day because their names fell later in the alphabet.

Dino walked up the stairs into the registration office thinking about going home and coming back tomorrow with his friends. But, he decided as long as he was there, he might as well go into the office and sign up for his freshman classes anyway.

Dino was about five-foot-five inches tall, weighed about 135 pounds, had greenish-grey eyes, and light brown hair below his ears. His mother was Scotch-Irish and his father was of Italian descent. Dino favored his mother in his eyes and facial features.

His slight limp was a constant reminder that he had been hit by a car when he was eight years old. He had a metal plate in his right leg, which was noticeable when he climbed stairs.

While he was walking down the hallway, he began to wonder where the registration room was. There was a girl walking just ahead and she dropped her scarf. She was about five-two, maybe a little under hundred pounds with long, beautiful blonde hair straight down the middle of her back. He couldn’t help but notice her small rounded breasts and her pretty blue eyes.

Dino stopped and picked up her scarf, and called to her, Hey! You dropped your scarf!’ She turned and began to walk toward him replying, Thank you. Do you know where the registration room is? I’m a little confused, this my first time out here to register for classes. Dino replied. It’s my first time, too! She asked, Do you mind if I walk with you? O.K. replied Dino and then asked her, What’s your name? She replied, Sue, what’s yours? I’m Dino. Do you live around here? Ask Dino. Sue replied, I live out in Kenosha county near Silver Lake with my parents. I live in Racine just off highway 20. Volunteered Dino.

As they continued to walk down the hallway, Dino found out that she had went to Wilmot High School, which was about three miles from Silver Lake. It was a small school compared to his high school, which was J.I.Case in Racine.

Dino.’s sharp eye noticed a poster on the wall up ahead. He directed Sue towards it and read the poster to her, We have to go to room 103 to sign up for our classes. All we have to do now is follow the arrows on these small posters on the walls. In a few minutes they found room 103 and got in line to wait their turn.

Dino’s curiosity got the best of him and he began to ask more questions of Sue. Did you belong to any clubs in high school? Ask Dino. Sue replied. Yeah, I was a cheerleader for the last two years of high school, and I also in the senior class play. I was a little nervous at first when I went on stage. But after the first act, I got over my stage fright and it turned out to be a lot of fun doing the play. What interests do you have Dino? I wasn’t an athlete or anything, but I watched a lot of the basketball, football, and baseball games that were played at the high school I went to. Remarked Dino.

Anxious to change the subject, Dino asked her, Where does your father work? He works at American Motors on the assembly line in Kenosha. Replied Sue. Dino chuckled a little and quickly added, My father works at American Motors too! The reason I laughed was because your father would probably be a little unhappy if he knew his daughter was talking to the son of a general foreman. My father said assembly workers don’t like foremen very much. She laughed at Dino’s statement and replied, That’s only when they are working together on the assembly line. After work , my father goes fishing and hunting with his foreman. In fact they are best friends! And on the weekends they go out drinking and they then spend the night talking about their fishing and hunting trips. That’s nice to know. Dino said with relief.

Sue said, It’s down to about ten people ahead of us now. Dino replied, It will probably take only a little while now to get signed up.

Sue, do you know what you are going to major in? Asked Dino. I hope to make English my major and to become a high school English teacher. I think, I would really enjoy doing that. Boasted Sue.

How about you Dino, what do you think, you will major in? Ask Sue. I hope to become a civil engineer. If I do all right here at Park Side my freshman year, I plan to transfer to the Madison campus. The school of engineering there is pretty well known in the business world, Dino said excitedly.

It was finally Dino’s and Sue’s turn to be signed up. Dino went over to one of the women at the counter. Sue went over to another line where a woman that was helping the new students registered. They both got done at the same time.

As they were leaving, Dino said to Sue’ Did you get all your classes you wanted? Most of them, a couple need prerequisites, so I’ll have to take an entry economics class this semester and take the other class I wanted next spring. Answer Sue. I signed up for Economics, too! Maybe I’ll see you next week in class. Said Dino. Sue smiled shyly. It was nice meeting you and talking with you today. Dino added. And I’m glad I met you today. Thanks for helping me find the registration room. And good luck with your classes, if I don’t see you again. Replied Sue.

They said good bye and headed out to the parking lot where their cars were parked. Dino was alone again now. He was thinking about his best friends, Tony and Joe and how close of friends they had been for the last five years. He had hoped that he would get a few classes as same as they would.

It only took Dino a few minutes to get to his car. The car was a 1965 Ambassador, American Motors product of course. Dino got into the car and started the motor up and headed back to Racine.

While he was driving, he was thinking how lucky he was to have met a girl like Sue today. He hoped that he would see her next week at school. He hadn’t been too pushy with her because he didn’t want to scare her off. He thought that she might be a nice girl to have for a steady girlfriend. He thought of the nice rounded ass and small but firm breasts she had. She had been wearing a tight short sleeve blouse and a pair of short tight jeans shorts. She had filled out her shorts very well which had tempted Dino to reach behind her while they were waiting in line to feel the curves of her ass, but common sense had save him from being a fool. He also liked her pleasant personality that she seemed to have.

Dino turned into his parents, driveway. Sitting in the car for a while he was thinking about how the past four years had gone by so fast. He never would have made it through high school and had fun doing without his best friends, Tony and Joe.

Dino and his family had moved to Racine from Detroit, Michigan after he had finished the seventh grade. His father had been offer, a good job by American Motors at the Kenosha assembly plant. Dino had been glad when his father had decided to take the job because growing up in Detroit had been rough on him. He had to learn to take care of himself at an early age. Some of the tough kids in the neighborhood used to pick on him until his father taught him the art of boxing and that helped him to take better care of himself.

The old neighborhood in Detroit used to be made of Italians, but the neighborhood was fast giving way to blight like so many other neighborhoods had in Detroit. But Dino still had some good memories of Detroit, though. He would once in a while think how he enjoyed the times he had gone to watch the Detroit Lions football team

play their home games. He also liked going to the rock concerts.

Dino had been sitting in the car day dreaming for about ten minutes, when his mother opened the front to the house and yelled to Dino. Are you going to sit in the car the rest of the day? Dino yelled back, I’m coming in! Hurry up! Your lunch is almost ready. Replied his mother. Dino got of the car and went in.

Dino had a younger brother and sister. His sister was about two years younger than he was and his brother was about four years younger. Carrie and Brad were both at school today because J.I.Case high school had started already last week. So just Dino and his mother were home today; and she was in a hurry because she had date with a girlfriend to go shopping. She had to use the car that Dino was using because her car was being repaired.

How was your morning, Dino? Asked his mother; Did you get signed up for your classes? Yeah, it was all right and I got the classes that I needed for this fall, I also even managed to meet a nice girl there at school. Laughed Dino. You must take after your uncle. He was always chasing girls too. Laughed his mother. You mean my Dad never chased girls! Tease Dino. Quit worrying about your dad and eat your lunch before it gets cold! she responded tartly. Realizing she didn’t mean to be so cold to her son, she mellowed her and added, I’ll be back from shopping about four. Then you can have the car back. O.K.? O.K. mom I’ll see you then, said Dino as he sat down to eat.

After he had finished his lunch, he thought would call up his friends. They had to work at the car wash today. Dino usually worked there too. All three of them had been working there for the past two years. During the school year they worked part-time after school and on the weekends. The past two summers they had worked full time. The car wash was only about two miles from where Dino lived.

As Dino was dialing the number for the car wash he was thinking about all the fun he and his two friends had during the time they worked at the car wash. One of the fun things was when the chauffeur of rich family would bring in the family limousine to be washed. After they cleaned and waxed it the chauffeur would take them for ride in it. Dino, Tony, and Joe really the feeling, they got riding in the limousine.

The phone rang four times before Tony had a chance to pick it up. It had been a busy day for Tony and Joe because Dino taken off. Tony finally answered the phone, Jones’ Carwash. Tony, it’s Dino, Replied Dino. I thought it was someone important! laughed Tony. I just called to let you guys know that I got all signed up, remarked Dino. Well, did you meet any nice looking girls? Asked Tony. Just one, but she is too nice for the likes of you, Tony, answered Dino. O.K., smart ass! Replied Tony as if he was pissed-off. Dino quickly came back, Don’t get excited Tony, I was just teasing you a little. A little calmer, Tony responded, I didn’t really get shook, Dino. Where is she from? She lives out in Kenosha county near Silver Lake, replied Dino. I have to hang up now, Dino. I’ll see you tonight, replied Tony as the boss came in to see what was keeping him from his work. O.K. Tony good-by, said Dino as he hung up the telephone.

Dino started to think over what had happened during the day. He was sure glad he had saved up enough money from working at the car wash to pay for his first year at Park Side. His father had told him if he could get a B average, he would help with cost of going to the UW-Madison campus. He thought to it sure would be neat to go there. Dino wondered how hard it would be to keep B average.

Dino decided to lay down on the couch in the living room and take a little nap. He was beat and needed to rest now. It had been very tiring standing in line all morning and so had trying to keep up a conversation with a pretty young girl.

That night Dino went over to Joe’s house to meet Tony and Joe. Joe lived over near J.I. Case high school in a new subdivision. Joe used to live on the south side of Racine, but the neighborhood was starting to go downhill. So, Joe’s parents thought it would a good idea to sell their house while they could still get a good price for it. Joe’s father worked at the Case Tractor plant near the old neighborhood. He didn’t driving the extra three miles to work since they moved.

Joe was a couple of inches taller than Dino and was a only child. He didn’t know if he wanted to go to Park Side with Dino and Tony because his draft number was so low that he would probably get drafted around Christmas time into the army. Joe really didn’t want to be drafted because he would probably go to Vietnam after he finished his boot camp training, because he had read a newspaper stating that fact. So, he was thinking about going to Canada if he got drafted. Joe thought the Vietnam War wasn’t worth dying for. His parents didn’t agree with him because his father had been drafted during the Korean War and fought in it. Joe’s parents were against the spread of Communism. Joe hadn’t told Dino or Tony about how he felt because he didn’t know how they would react.

Tony was about the same size as Dino, but a little heavier than Dino. Tony also had the same problem Joe had about being drafted into the army after Christmas. But Tony didn’t care if he got drafted. He thought he would go to Park Side for the fall semester and have a little fun.

Dino, Tony, and Joe were sitting at the bar in the basement of Joe’s parents’ house. They were drinking beer and wishing they had a joint to pass around. They couldn’t smoke marijuana in Joe’s house because his father would throw him out of the house for good along with his friends. Joe’s father had told him if he ever caught him smoking marijuana he would turn him into the police himself. Dino’s and Tony’s fathers felt the same way. So they would only pass a joint around when they were riding around in Dino’s car or when they were down by Lake Michigan. ( Racine was right on the shores of Lake Michigan.)

In Wisconsin, you only had to be eighteen years old to drink beer legally, but you could only drink beer in your home or
