Chapter 1
Alison Parker was finally turning eighteen. It had seemed to take forever for her special day to come around. It was Tuesday and when she woke her parents were waiting excitedly downstairs for her. They had been up early and decorated their conservatory with purple balloons with silver 18’s printed on them.
She was greeted by her old faithful dog, Scruffy, who seemed to know this was an extra special day for her. He was wagging his hairy tail even harder than usual.
Scruffy was of medium height and 12 years old. He was her present for her 6th birthday. He was of the Heinz 57 variety. His fur was grey and white with threads of black which stuck out all over the place and grew out of control when he wasn’t clipped regularly. Scruffy had long white eyebrows and whiskers that made him look like a wise old man and his tail looked like he had stuck the tip of it in a tin of black paint. The little rescue pup gave the family so much joy.
Her parents gave her an extra-long hug and wished her happy birthday and presented her with an envelope, and a small box wrapped in a thin silver ribbon. She was so excited she couldn’t decide which to open first. Her mother wanted her to open the box and her father egged her on to open the envelope he had gave her.
Just too keep the momentum of this special occasion going Alison announced
I think I would like to have breakfast first.
Her parents sighed with anguish.
Toast birthday girl?
Her mother asked.
yes, two slices please, I’m starving
Her mother fussed around the kitchen clanking doors and pots. 3 minutes later she presented her daughter 2 slices of toast with an 18 stamped into them.
Oh mum, that’s great, thank you.
Jam?
Oh yes please.
Good, because I bought you that special strawberry one you like.
Thanks mum, love you.
So what’s that layabout boyfriend of yours going to buy you then petal?
Frank not now.
Her mother chirped. Don’t tease her.
What? I was only asking. No one will ever be good enough for my little girl.
He winked at Alison. She knew he secretly liked her beau. Frank and Donnie often had ‘Man’ discussions about football and his motorbike. Though he wasn’t happy about the age gap between them. Frank thought that he was a little too old for his baby girl in his opinion.
Well, open your gifts then lovey.
I’ll open the little box first.
She gently pulled the ribbon trying extend the suspense. She popped the top of the box open and sitting on a velvety cushion was a silver necklace with a diamanté 18 hanging on it. Oh Mum its lovely. Thank you. Will you put it on for me?
Miriam carefully undone the clasp and placed around her daughters neck then done it up again for her. The Swarovski crystals sparkled as her mother laid the necklace around her.
So glad you like it. It’s just a little keep sake.
Miriam smiled What about the envelope?
She said eagerly.
I might not open that now
She grinned.
Her mum and dad looked at her with frustration.
Oh OK, I’ll open it. I don’t know who is more excited, you two or me?
Just hurry up.
Miriam said with anticipation.
Alison deliberately opened the envelope slowly then
