TROUBLE IN TOMBSTONE
PROLOGUE
Walking briskly out of the saloon one balmy night, he found a match in his vest pocket and lit the cigar he had just purchased. Looking around the dusty town at twilight, he thought he would start his nightly rounds. He passed the café and smelled welcome aromas of steak frying. It wasn’t quite time for his dinner yet, but he was looking forward to it.
Horses were tied up to the hitching posts in front of most of the stores. Cowboys coming in were brushing the dust off their jeans and chaps, while heading for the saloon for the evening. The wide street between the big, wooden buildings was muddy from recent rains. He took care to avoid the biggest puddles, so his boots wouldn’t be caked.
Strolling down the street, he looked into most windows of the various businesses he passed by and smiled. Nothing seemed amiss and no one was shooting guns in the air or an equivalent stupidity. He had been careful to take most of their guns anyway, so that sort of behavior didn’t occur very often. He preferred a quiet town.
Coming up on the Bird Cage Saloon a few doors down, he saw some shadows on the side of the building. He walked quickly up to that side, but the shadows had vanished. Puzzled, he looked up and down the street and then started for the back of the building. What had he seen? It was dark now and harder to see anything. When he came to the back of the saloon, he wasn’t prepared for what he saw – a body. Going over for a closer look, it was a woman and a lot of blood everywhere.
He ran quickly over to the Marshall’s Office
and got his deputy. Together, they ran back and moved the body to the doctor’s office, a little further down the block. Doc Brown took a good look and then looked at the Marshall and his deputy.
Wyatt, this here’s Margarita. You know, that friend of Billy Milgreen.
What’s the cause of death, Doc?
She’s been stabbed a few times.
Wyatt looked at his deputy. Where’s Billy?
Over at the Bird Cage, I reckon. Want me to go get him?
Oh, yeah and bring that other girl friend of his as well. What’s her name again?
Gold Dollar.
Bring her too. Let’s get on top of this fast.
Billy and Gold Dollar came reluctantly and had to be prodded many times by the deputy. Wyatt looked hard at them.
Take a good look, folks. One of you did this. Isn’t that right?
Billy gasped at the dead woman and the blood. Gold Dollar laughed.
You think this is funny?
Wyatt was angry.
Yeah, the tramp was flirting with my man here. She got what she deserved, but I didn’t do it.
Deputy, please escort these two to the jail. They’re spending the night because I have more questions for them.
Yes, sir.
He took them down to the jail complaining all the way.
Listen, Wyatt,
started Doc, Gold Dollar always carries a stiletto knife with her. That’s common knowledge.
Yeah, I know.
"Find it. That knife probably
