CHAPTER ONE
Cynthia was standing in front of her mirror trying to figure out what to wear. The last time she saw Mr. Carl he was on his way to prison for killing his step farther. It seemed as though people would never stop talking about it. She was fifteen then. The only thing that mattered to her at the time was her hair and her best friend Sissy.
Ten years later Deacon Carl now thirty-five is out and, he had sent her mother a letter asking if Cynthia could help him write his story. In the letter he explained that he had read in the paper that Cynthia wrote a book. He saw that it was doing very well. He hoped she wasn’t too young to handle his story.
But at the same time he felt like she could do it without convicting him all over again. She was just a kid when he was arrested. When he wrote the letter he was surprised to see that Cynthia’s family still lived in the neighborhood. He was happy it didn’t come back unopened.
Cynthia was feeling a range of emotions before she went to meet Deacon. She even felt honored that someone thought her writing was good enough to help them write their life story. These last ten years had been an emotional roller coaster in her own life. After high school she had no doubt that she wanted to be a journalist and travel the world. After graduating from college nothing turned out like she thought it would. She started working for the local paper, writing stories on neighborhood gardening and, special events happening throughout the city.
This was definitely not what she wanted to be doing.
So in her spare time and during lunch breaks she would jot down some notes about how she was feeling and, which way her life was going. The next thing she knew she had filled up a whole note book. What she wrote helped her to realize she could not and, would not give up on her dreams. These precious words are what lead to her writing a book ‘Educated Fool’.
Her grandmother always warned her not to end up like some people knowing everything but not having common sense.
You got a good education now let it work for you,
she’d say.
After three outfits she decided on some jeans and her pink top. She grabbed her tablet and, her phone and, the keys. She was half way down the stairs before she realized she still had on her flip flops. She slipped on some flats and, left. Deacon was only five blocks away but she decided to drive anyway.
When she pulled up in front of Deacon’s house she fluffed out her hair. She put on a little red lip gloss and hopped out of the car. She looked up just in time to see Deacon push the curtain back in place and come to the door. She grabbed her tablet and, purse and went up the front steps. When Deacon opened the door he was wearing a pink apron. Cynthia smiled at that and Deacon looked down and snatched it off.
Cynthia, how are you? You’ve grown into a nice looking young lady. So do you prefer Cynthia or, Miss Green?
Deacon said all in one breath.
Cynthia is fine everybody still calls me that anyway,
Cynthia said.
In any case please come on in. Have a seat and you can put your stuff where ever it is best for you. I thought your mother was coming with you. I mean it’s okay if you come alone. I just want you to feel comfortable,
Deacon said.
I’m fine being here alone besides my mom is volunteering at the Home today,
Cynthia said.
Can I get you anything to drink or, eat? I kind of got carried away with the breakfast. There’s bacon and a few eggs left and, I’d be glad to make some fresh toast. The coffee is still hot,
Deacon stated.
That sounds good but please don’t go to any trouble for me,
Cynthia said.
It’s no trouble at all. Come on in the kitchen so we can get to know each other before we get started,
Deacon insisted.
They talked about how Cynthia came to write her book. Cynthia thanked Deacon for breakfast. She said her grandmother always said food taste so much better when someone else is doing the cooking. Deacon was pleased that she enjoyed the food.
"May I ask why you chose me to write your
