    The man and woman watched the small boat sail towards the setting sun. It was peaceful on the ocean and the boat got smaller and smaller in the sun touching the horizon.

    The man held the woman, and the boat disappeared. The woman cried.

    Don’t be sad, dear, the man said.

    He could have stayed here, she said. He could have tended the olive garden, tended the flock, been married and had kids. She sobbed, and wiped her eyes again. Why did he have to prove there was something beyond the horizon, rather than sailing to the edge, and falling off?

    I guess he wanted to see how far he could go, the man said.

    Vivaldi looked down from his window and asked the young lady on the street below, Excuse me, do you play the flute?

    Why do you ask? the pretty young girl asked.

    I’ve written a new concerto for flute, Vivaldi said, and I want to hear what it sounds like, from across the room.

    Are you sure that’s all you’re interested in? she said.

    That’s all for the time being, he said. But maybe later we can stroll the piazza at sunset.

    She thought for a moment, and said, Do you have a flute in your room?

    I do, he said. It’s clean as a whistle.

    Are you sure you’re Vivaldi? she said. Hum me your concerto.

    He was unable to produce the music, and she said, "I’ve heard about this ruse. But,
