    A House in the Field

    There was a time when all this mattered, a time when I remembered my great-grandmother’s old house in the middle of a field.

    It was in rural lower Alabama, and my family went there once.

    It sat by itself in the field, rundown, and the inside was as if people still lived there, but it had been vacant for years.

    We were told we could take one item, and I wanted the double-barreled shotgun, but for some reason, was told I couldn’t have it by someone. I ended up taking an old wall-mounted, hand-crank coffee grinder.

    We were in the house courtesy of a man who was the descendant of the man who had married my great-grandmother. They had lived in the house I was now in.

    It was a small, wood-frame house, with one or two bedrooms, and I remember one had a feather bed, which I’d never seen, but knew for some reason that it was the bed of those times.
