ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I n regard to this book, Debra Tarasiewicz has been a big help, typing, compiling information and knows exactly where to find it.
With gratitude to the staff of Crosslands Retirement Community and the friendships I have with the other residents.
And to my youngest son, for asking me to write a memoir because he thought my story was unusually interesting.
FOREWORD
W hy write a memoir and turn it into a book? Because I was asked to write one. It makes me happy to recall my life, although a few memories are painful and I feel regret and remorse. I see many books that say The Life of…
or A Memoir
. So I have everything all there. There’s nothing that anyone would mind being in a book. Either they’re pretty mature or long dead. So I think we’re ready to put it together. We start, my editor and I.
I will choose from three sources: The accumulated letters, tapes, photos (memorabilia), spontaneous recall and annual Christmas letters that Carl and I, then Jim and I, sent out.
10 time periods are convenient:
1. My family before I was born on October 4, 1921 (ancestors), through grades seven and eight in Weston, MA
2. High School, College, World War II, Engagement to Carl Barus,
Which includes:
• 9th grade when tutored at 723 Park Ave. with Joan Milliken
• Putney School, VT (June ’35-June ’37)
• Brimmer School, Boston, MA 11th & 12th grades (’37-’39)
• Bryn Mawr College (’39-’43)
• Four summers at Homer Noble Farm (the home of Robert Frost) in Ripton, VT caring for Kay &
