The negative toll on Beauty Standards

Dear BGM Reader,

Society has slowly, but surely, corrupted the perspective of beauty for all women. People in society (both men and women) have pushed the belief that a woman’s worth is validated by her looks. These “looks,” of course, revolve around a specific checklist: perfect hair, flawless skin, shining smile, great legs… the list goes on. These pressures to be physically attractive have long influenced women throughout history. The criteria sometimes changes, (in one century they are looking for curvier bodies, while in the next, slender bodies are desired), but the negative impact has stayed the same. Beauty standards have attacked many groups who don’t fit into the criteria; those who are not the “right” race, size, character, etc, become ostracized.
