    Conversation with a Muse

    Muse: Hello.

    Writer: Hello.

    Muse: Am I interrupting anything?

Writer: No, I’m just sitting here on a Friday afternoon, sitting quietly, enjoying a beer.

Muse: I hope you don’t mind me interrupting, but I thought, it’s kind of quiet today, so I’d check in.

Writer: Not a problem. Like I said, I’m just sitting here having a beer.

Muse: So, how have things been going?

    Writer: Pretty good.

    Muse: That’s good.

Writer: I guess you’re not talking about work, or things in general, but writing.

Writer: Well, I’m not real good on technique, but if I’m moved, and spontaneous, then things come out pretty naturally.

    Muse: Say what?

Writer: Pretty naturally. My natural voice is about all I’ve got.

Muse: That’s about all you need, isn’t it?

Writer: Yeah, but a little technique would be nice.

    Muse: Hey, technique will come.

Writer: Thanks. I’ll keep working on it.

    The Rest of the Story

What follows is an essay I wrote for and e-mailed to the woman here in Orlando who edits my books.

I thought she might be interested because she had seen an article in the Sentinel about Tom Petty and his Gainesville roots.

She knew I was in Gainesville around that time, so I wrote what I remembered and called it The Rest of the Story.
