Chapter 1

Anita

I’m telling you girl, if I were you, I wouldn’t put up with that bullshit your man is handing out, Tamika said as she poured herself another glass of wine and curled up on my sofa. I had an aunt, you know my mother’s sister, Tamika said pausing to look at me as she woofed down one glass and poured herself another ample drink.

Rolling my eyes and turning away from her, with my back facing her I had heard this a million times. My mother named me after her baby sister. She loved that name Tamika. I wished she had named me something else because I’m tired of hearing her compare me to her loving sister.

I know girl now get on with what you want to tell me. She glances across at me her eyes dazed from too much wine and her words slurred. She stood and walked in the kitchen carrying a half glass of red wine and stops at the cabinet and searches around for something. She hesitates, then turns in my direction and leans toward me. 

You got any more of those cookies. They go great with this wine.

I shrug and get up and saunter over to the kitchen in my studio apartment and open a tin box of tea cakes I baked for my boyfriend Isaiah. She has been sitting, drinking his wine and running him down for days. And now she wants to eat all his cakes. She takes a bite. You know you treat that two-timing man-whore too good.

Watch what you say about my man, I said to her. She knew I was kidding. It wasn’t like I had gone blind. I knew what he was, but as long as he hid what he was doing, then I figured it was OK. It wasn’t like I was innocent. My boss in the law firm where I worked was hot and if he had asked me out, I would have gone with him in a fast second.

Isaiah and I had an understanding. We could date other people unless it became a problem. But first we had to notify the other one of our intentions, and then we had to reevaluate our relationship. That was his suggestion when I caught him texting a woman.  

That lying ass man you’re dating has been lying to you every day. And don’t tell me about your fucking agreement. The only agreement that is being kept is yours. Whether you realize it or not, you’re sitting here on a Friday night waiting for him, and he’s out with some white girl in his law firm.

How do you know that? I felt jealous, but I just thought it was Tamika being nosy and didn’t know what she was talking about. How would she know what he was doing tonight?

If I were you, I’d get dressed and go to that club and get something on his ass. It always helps to give a man a good dose of his own medicine, but you’re too stupid to confront him. That’s why I’m going with you.

Tamika got up and swayed a little. "Are you sure we should go? You look too
