About this ebook

Rika Hasegawa has the perfect job. As an undersecretary in one of Japan’s largest publishing companies, she gets to read as many books as she wants, while keeping the office affair between her bosses secret.

But when they get caught and fired, Rika must say goodbye to the easy life of junk reading and computer solitaire, as a new boss enters the office...and her life.

Nobuki Miyano is the hottest thing Rika has ever seen...and the rudest, most arrogant jerk she’s ever worked for.

Thus begins the story of polar opposites, between a lazy bookworm and a genius workaholic and a magnetic attraction neither can deny.

    Dedication

    FOR MY HANDSOME DEVIL.

    Takasaki-yama was fun, wasn't it?

Next time, I'll eat before I get in the park.

Here's to many more monkey-slapping good times with you.

Note: We didn't actually slap a monkey...we just smacked the paw of a certain cheeky macaque who wanted to steal snacks from my bag.

    The Handsome Devil

Ooh! Oh! Ah, yes! Don't stop...don't stop!

People say you can get used to anything.

I don't think they've ever had to deal with their bosses having obnoxiously loud sex for the third time in as many hours.

I'd been doing this for two years and I still turned red every time Mr. Abe and Aimi mashed their privates together.

I think I've been in a state of perpetual blush for the past six hundred days.

Even though I sat at my desk five meters away in another office, a heavy oak door between us, I still heard Aimi Tanaka, the secretary to the foreign marketing manager, and Hiroyuki Abe, the foreign marketing manager, screwing away on his expensive mahogany desk.

Of course, no one else knew.

I was the only employee in the office to hear them at their meetings and they knew I wouldn't dare expose the affair; I cared too much about my job, and quite frankly, I didn't care what they did behind closed door...except most times, I wished ear plugs were a necessity at work.

Unfortunately, the ringing phone at my desk made such things wishful thinking and I picked up the receiver, hoping the person on the other line couldn't hear my bosses.

You'd wonder why I continue working with such crazy sex rabbits, I'm sure.

    Easy.

    They left me alone.

While other employees struggled to complete their tasks in the face of impossible deadlines and appease customers impossible to please, I did my own work at my own pace, without the terror and stress of having a supervisor looking over my shoulder continuously.

Mostly because my supervisors were too busy fucking each other.

Working for Shokogan Publishing was a dream for many seeking to enter the publishing world, and many employees here likened the company to Purgatory...once you successfully traversed all the various levels of Hell (being the cubicles and computers constantly on the fritz), you can find Elysium, in the form of your own office with a view and your own secretary.

I know people who would kill for a chance like that.

I didn't have such ambitions. I wasn't like everyone else wandering these marble hallways with dreams of working with the next Haruki Murakami or Banana Yoshimoto.

I just wanted to work here because I loved to read, and everyone knows about the truckload of books lying around a publishing company.

If I had my way, I'd never pay for another book again.

I cradled the phone against my shoulder and took a deep breath.

Hello! I trilled, maybe a little too loud. I wanted the person on the other line to hear me, not my bosses playing hide the pickle. You've reached Hiroyuki Abe's office. This is Rika. How can I help you?

I stifled a yawn that threatened to split my face in half; I stayed up past two in the morning, reading the latest horror story by one of our bestselling authors. Just another occupational hazard, I guess.

The person on the other line cleared their throat. It is always good to hear employees such as yourself show such enthusiasm. You do your boss credit.

I cracked a smile, even though the man couldn't see it. I read somewhere that if you needed to lie over the phone, then you should act as though they were in front of you. Thank you! What can I do for you?

The elderly man coughed. Yes, would you connect me with Mr. Abe?

    Hah. Yeah right.

I'm so sorry, but he's in a meeting at the moment, I said without missing a beat, still smiling from ear to ear. May I take a message and have him call you back when he gets out?

    There was a slight pause.

I see. Will you inform him that I would like to see him sometime in the afternoon, perhaps after lunch?

I typed a quick memo on the computer. Of course. Who may I say is calling?

Just tell him it's Saito Hamazaki, hm?

My shoulders stiffened. Shit. Of course, President Hamazaki!
