Although Emily Koch began writing her first novel when she was about ten, she didn’t write a commercially published novel until she was in her twenties.
What accounts for the ten-year gap?
‘When I told Mum my novel was about a girl with an alcoholic mother, she was so worried people would assume it was autobiographical (it wasn’t) that I ditched it,’ says Emily. ‘But a couple of life events – a car accident in my early twenties, and Mum being seriously ill with throat cancer a few years later – took me back to writing fiction, and I started working on the idea that would become If I Die Before I Wake.
