Charlotte

As the plane landed on English soil, I felt my heart flutter with excitement. It had taken me hours to get there – twelve to be precise – but it was all worth it to finally have my lifelong dream come true. At a very young age I decided that I wanted to be a media executive because I wanted the glamorous life associated with that, and my intensive research led me to believe that there was only one place I could start that journey – the most famous company in the entire world. Banks Enterprises.

Sure, it was in London, half way across the world, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. So I worked, I slaved, I missed nights out with my friends and I studied hard to earn the rare foreign internship that I needed to finally get a placement at the company that would finally kick start my life. I envisioned my future very clearly, and I couldn’t wait for that dream to come to fruition.

Now I was here, in London, for a whole year. After this, I would return home and finish my college courses which would also help me land a position in one of the top American companies, but I already knew that by just having this internship on my résumé, I was pretty much guaranteed any job I wanted. The world would be my oyster.

I raced out of the airport terminal, desperate to have my feet on English soil. Once outside, and after I gulped in a few deep calming breaths of the cool English air, I stepped into the nearest cab and asked to be taken to the address of my temporary accommodation. That was one of the great things about this job, it might not have paid too well but it came with housing included which was perfect.

The pictures I’d viewed online were the most luxurious company accommodation that I’d ever laid my eyes upon – even better than what I had at home – which I felt was a very good start for what was to come. I was used to a very modest middle class upbringing, which was why I hungered for more. My parents had sometimes struggled, and I didn’t want that for my children... when I eventually had them sometime in the future. 

This year was going to be amazing – the start of my real life – and I could not wait for it.

Almost as soon as I walked into the place I would call home for the next twelve months, I noticed a note sitting on the table in the middle of the room.

‘Meeting today, 12.30pm. Don’t be late.’

Okay, so it was short and to the point, but that was alright. It just meant I wouldn’t have any time to recover from my jet lag before I jumped in the deep end. Luckily, I’d spent most of the flight asleep so after a hot shower, I would be fine...
