Betrayal
Chapter 1
Louise
S o I’m really trusting you with this,
said my boss, Tom. He eyed me seriously, giving me a few seconds for it to sink in. I could easily get one of my more... experienced journalists on this job, but I’m giving it to you.
He was a smarmy man, but I needed this job so I had to let his remark slide. He continued, "You need to prove yourself to me to keep your position here, and this is the way to do it."
Translation: If I didn’t do this, I was going to lose my job.
If I lost my job, I’d lose my home, leaving me with nothing. I’d worked too damn hard to get this far, I didn’t want to lose everything now.
Okay, that’s fine,
I said quietly, almost in a whisper. It so wasn’t fine, but I couldn’t exactly say that aloud.
So everyone knows that Scott Graham is a rags to riches story, but no one really knows the details. No one knows anything about him. He’s very elusive, so this is going to be a massive challenge.
As if I didn’t already know that.
Tom went on. So this isn’t going to be your typical interview. You’re going to have to find a way in, a way to connect with him, and a way to get him to open up.
I gulped down the pit of fear that started to spread around my stomach. I hadn’t been in the business long enough to know all of the sneaky tricks that others did – and I wasn’t entirely sure that I was comfortable with it either. I didn’t like to do anything immoral or hurtful.
Okay, sure.
I nodded, acting far more confident than I truly felt. I’ll get on it.
I walked out of Tom’s office in a bit of a daze, wondering where I was going to go next. How the hell was I going to pull this one off? It was practically impossible. I didn’t even need to search Scott Graham online to know that he was a closed off man – and that many people had already tried to break his shell, and failed. He was the sort of good-looking man that attracted supermodels, but even the women chasing after him hadn’t made him crack.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and very sexy. He had chiseled cheekbones, dark, mysterious eyes and strong muscles. That, combined with his billions of dollars, had made him a target for all kinds of gold diggers.
And if they couldn’t get anything from him, then what chance did I have?
Well, that didn’t matter. Doubts would get me nowhere. I had to do this in one way or another, and I needed a plan to help me with that.
Chapter 2
Scott
Another night, another boring event. This time an art gallery opening for some douchebag young artist who thought the world owed him everything. Unfortunately, he was talented, so the world flocked to him – even me. But then, I only went where everyone else did, just to have my face on show.
Keeping up appearances to the rest of the world was important because I needed to keep a public profile without actually letting anyone know
