    THE BEAUTIFUL

    BURDEN

    Joshua’s Story

One beautiful summer afternoon, I was hanging out with my four kids by myself. My wife had gone to a women’s conference at church. We played at the park and then decided to ride our bicycles and scooters down the street for some ice cream. It was just one of those perfect Saturday afternoons. The weather was great, and it was the perfect time to go enjoy some ice cream. As we were all cruising down Salem Street in our awesome town of Medford, Joshua, who was four years old at the time, abruptly stopped riding his scooter. He just stood still by the side of the road behind me and the other kids. His siblings and I wondered what he was doing. We all started shouting, Come on Joshua; let’s go! Let’s go! For some reason, he still did not move. It was as if he was frozen in his tracks. His eyes seemed to be steadily focused on something only he could see.

I immediately put my bike down and walked back to check on him. That’s when I noticed a homeless man lying under a bench. My other three kids and I rode right past him, but Joshua, who was behind all of us, noticed the guy and immediately decided to stop. Joshua was moved with compassion, and he became heartbroken for him. He was so broken he could not ride past him. The rest of us were focused on ice cream, but not Joshua. His mind and whole being had suddenly been consumed by something else—this homeless man. It literally moved him to tears.

It quickly dawned on me that this was the first time my Joshua had ever seen a homeless person. In that quick moment, something was revealed to me: God had given my son Joshua a burden for the homeless. This revelation hit me while I was standing there trying to help guide him through this defining moment. I realized that Joshua was broken with what broke the heart of God concerning the homeless. He was feeling what the rest of us were not feeling. It wasn’t that his siblings and I did not care about the homeless, but Joshua was feeling something more than all of us. He felt God’s heartbeat concerning the homeless.

Maybe it wasn’t a coincidence after all that we named him Joshua. The name Joshua means, Jehovah saves. Joshua in the Bible was also a great fighter. It was all hitting me at once. Just like Joshua in the Bible, God had given my son a heart to fight for the destitute and to be a voice for the voiceless. At that moment, in order to help Joshua feel better, we all walked over to the man and prayed for him. He was drunk. He probably did not even hear us pray for him. But, we were all touched, and it made Joshua feel a lot better. We also gave the man our ice cream money and rode back home to get some more cash for the ice cream. This encounter happened about two years ago, but to this day, when my wife Michelle and I ask Joshua to pray, whether it’s just praying for our food or during our regular family devotional times, Joshua always prays for the homeless. He prays for everyone in the world to have a home. Our Joshua has the beautiful burden for the homeless from our beautiful savior,
