About the Author
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
My great aunt, Margaret Schmit, 'Markie' to us, was a traveling one room school teacher back in the horse and wagon days. She somehow wound up with a ten foot blackboard in her living room upon which I learned to write, longhand, before ever attending school. She taught me that no matter how many books, letters, or poems I would ever write, the most important words I could ever put to paper are; Thank You.
I want to thank a long list of supporters, and even a few detractors, that have made straight the way of the Lord for our prison ministry. Dale Ormsby, is the first person who comes to mind. Dale never came inside with us but his constant faith in the worthiness of our mission assuaged any personal doubts that threatened to confound our progress.
David Michael grew up just down the road from me in Wisconsin, but we never met until we were in our fifties and discovered our mutual cheese-headedness. David exemplified a willingness to listen as the ordinary opportunities of our lives revealed themselves to be miraculous.
Dan Ely included me in a Saturday morning coffee club that brought church to the sidewalk in the realization that every conversion starts with conversation.
Paul Titus, Michael Buckingham, Richard Brooks and Martin Swett are businessmen that met the financial needs of furthering the ministry. They put their money where my mouth was because it was a brotherly thing to do.
Arthur William Bowen III walked to high school with me every day and forty some years later walked with me in spirit and in truth as I made my way inside the gates of Pelican Bay.
Susan Littman shares a love of reading and considered this a story worth repeating.
The men who joined the ministry: Christian Neaf, Evan Scott, Sid Boney, Matt Niclai, Al Maurer, Michael Hoffman, Roosevelt Whittington III, Cameron English, Dan Weber have put time, heart, and muscle into the equation, Where two or more are gathered together in My Name I am there also.
Mike Libolt often filled the gas tank of our caravan but how he filled our hearts with encouragement is the real measure of his support.
My editor Alycia Morales helped me convey, in English, what might've remained a 'best intention'.
Only the Lord knows who our anonymous supporters are but I pray we're introduced at the great Resurrection feast!
My wife, Trey, caught a new song in her heart singing with the choir at San Quentin and has kept the beat alive in our household ever since. My Pastor, Donald Wesley, taught me to always defer to her if anyone ever asked me if I was a follower of Jesus Christ as only her testimony could ever hope, or dare, to recommend me. Thank you, Trey, for being the reason any of my words ring true.
FOREWORD
It is interesting to me that when Jesus spoke about what people did and did not do, it wasn't about Scripture memorization, church attendance, or paying your tithes. It was all summed up into, Did you care about the hungry? Whom did you feed? How did you treat those dying of thirst? Where there was nakedness, did you provide clothing? Did you welcome the strangers and visit to the sick? How about prison…did you go to the prisons?
Not many of us have ever walked into a prison, looked in the eyes of a criminal and said, By the way no matter what, Jesus loves you.
Will Schmit does just that and has made it his life's mission to shake hands with inmates and offer them the unconfined hope of Jesus Christ.
This Prison Minister's Memoir and Training Manual provides all the tools you'll need to connect with the lowest in serving the Most High. Reading Jesus Inside will give you the how to, as well as the why, the who, the what, and the when and where. This book will challenge you to reach beyond yourself, beyond the walls of jails and penitentiaries to bring the message of hope, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The other thing I felt while reading Jesus Inside, was Will's heart for the captive. He has a contagious passion and I hope that you become infected with it, and never recover.
They are waiting…

FOREWORD
As a child, I could be rescued from poor choices. The store owner who caught me shoplifting simply called my dad and my sentence was a stiff lecture and an in-house imprisonment. As I got older, my poor choices were met with stiffer punishment. My parents could not simply ask the nice police officer to dismiss my speeding ticket.
Fortunately, good decisions…with a lot of grace and help from others…began to move me in a healthy direction. In fact, it was the help from others
part that led me to pursue a career as a minister. I am well aware that a steady diet of bad choices combined with difficult circumstance could see me in a very different setting…prison.
The Bible teaches us that we followers of Christ all have a part to play
in this thing called the body
. I could not do what I do were it not for the multitudes of fellow believers all playing their part in doing God’s work in this fallen world.
Will Schmit is a friend who plays his part. In his whimsical, yet hard-hitting manner he writes an operational manual that strikes at the heart of the reader. Most manuals
are prescriptions for insomnia. Jesus Inside captures the critical points of dynamic prison ministry in story form, weaving his own experience with the how to’s of working with inmates. His cynicism, wit and humor capture the environment on the inside
.
To say this work is inspiring sounds trite, but it is. You’ll be laughing on one page only to be weeping on another. Jesus Inside will draw you into a journey—a journey of real
