    -J.L.S.

    I cannot have just one,

    Even on my best days.

    Please fill my ears with

    All the songs of yesteryear—

    Think how

    Easily they

    Could translate

    Into today.

    The other way around comes

    When we speak so fondly

    Of the things

    Which were

    Considered social taboos as

    Recently as

    Thirty years ago.

    A new glow of recognition

    Seems to help give

    These people new life;

    No longer are they forced

    To live our alien ways

    By strange sounds and

    Rituals which would

    Make their heads spin.

I’ve seen it in all the

    Archives which became

    Antiquated long before they

    Thought they would.

    2/24/16

    How can the number fit

    So comfortably for some

    But have others shrieking

    In terror?

I fall under the latter of

The two, but I suppose that

    Is not news to you.

    You knew how to remain

    Modest, but kind.

    Not so many would find

    That easy to understand,

    Especially since the public

    Likes to air too much

    Dirty laundry.

    They would love to bring

    My fear of numbers into

    Play; who knows how

    They would like to

    Evaluate your life as well?

    Never afraid, though, because

    I don’t recall you having

    To cower in the corner

    When madness threatened to

    Take over your presence.

    Pioneer, stay strong, and

    Do not waste time in

    Fearing numbers which may

    Try to work against you.

    There’s so much more to

    Life than plotting out

    Elaborate, but fruitless

    Equations.

    2/14/16

    You took me to an

    Unfamiliar setting, and

    I could hardly get my

    Bearings.

    This place—I do not know

That to do, but I have this

    Sudden urge to move.

All I can see is night, except

    For the mental images in

    My head.

    Could you provide me with

    A little more information?

    Obviously, my technology

    Does not work out here,

    But that no longer matters,

    For the endorphins pumped

    Into my heart have me

    Believing that I’m part
