*Not every poem included in this book is dated in chronological order.  This is not an oversight on my part. Rather, I have made changes and substitutions over the years.

    -J.L.S.

Things I did not wish to know,

Why did you have to let it go?

All the times we had together,

    How much did they mean?

I know they meant to me

(The world), and I would not

    Trade them for any amount

    Of earthly treasures or

    Anything else that people would

Try to pawn off on me.

I could never do this to you,

So please don’t let me be

    In my most desperate

Hour of need, when I am

    Most likely to bleed over.

How our love could have been

There has to be a way we

    Can salvage what we have.

    6/5/06

I hate myself so much that

I find it hard to sleep, thus

I drown in the bitter tears

    That I weep.

The rest of the world put on hold

Long enough for me to pour out my sorrow.

Without a shoulder to cry on but my

Own—so selfish of a girl to let her

Emotions get in the way during

This bitter cold when only my

Guilt is enough to keep me warm.

Though I swore I would stay inside,

(Killing me), I feel my innards being

Squeezed for everything that they’ve got.

There should be no guilt, this should

Not be a big deal, but my mind is

Running on this hamster wheel, and

I don’t feel that I can stop anytime soon.

A perpetual doom—all this cannot be!

I cannot let my love go free, oh, no matter

What has happened back then because

    He is my freedom, and he is my muse;

Such a privilege I must not abuse.

Ofreo and Eurydice should not have

Had to undergo such a cruel fate.

All would be well if they were

    Allowed their time together.

    10/21/05

    This day to be free

    To celebrate

    Those who died

    To end the tyranny

    Of other countries interfering

    And making

    Us conform to

    Their ways.

So grateful that I did not

Live to see those days when

    Certain people were treated

    Like property, with the mark

    On their forehead to bear—

All the suffering they had to

    Endure through

    Incurable wounds

    And clenched teeth.

    Determined to reach the goal

Of making life easier for their

    Descendants—life that would

Allow them to live by their

    Constitutional rights.

To watch with wonder the sights

    That made this country great,

    While our memory serves

Those who died for freedom’s cause.

    God bless the U.S.A.!

    5/27/06

    I feel its sharp pins

As I get lost in the green—

    Shelter from the rain.

    6/10/06

    The bird sings outside,

    Set to mark the start of day;

    Music fills my ears.

    6/10/06

    Love has set its gaze

On my sad and weary soul.

    I got here this way.
