Aubrey Lane burst through the whitewash, gasping for air. Her surfboard had already made land and she envied its resting place. She was well aware of how ridiculous she must have looked when she had fallen from it moments earlier, and laughed at the thought of seeing herself. Her body was tired and sore; she felt like she had just been through a washing machine, and couldn’t face another attempt at conquering the waves. So, defeated she dragged the board to her spot on the beach and collapsed onto the towel.

Aubrey decided then and there that her dream of learning to surf was over. ‘Never again,’ she thought, as she scrapped the sand out of the crotch of her bikini.

It had been eight weeks since she had moved to the aptly-named Surfers Paradise on Australia’s Gold Coast, and she was still a novice in the water. She knew she was a failed beach bum, but actually, she had not expected anything more. Aubrey’s life, until this point, had been mostly city based. Born and bred in Brisbane, she was used to city life, and her sea change was never going to be easy. She was programed for the efficient and predictable bustle of the city, and only now was starting to let go of routine, and embrace the relaxed and changeable nature of coastal living. She felt like she was finally starting to blend in, but to the locals she was still full of rush and urgency.

The sun was high in the cloudless sky. Aubrey slathered sunscreen onto her sweaty skin, longing for the air-conditioned sanctuary of her high-rise apartment. She wished she could go inside and have a cold drink, but it was not time, she had to be content with sipping the warm liquid from the bottle in her bag. Aubrey relaxed as she wrung the salt water from her long, dark hair and made herself comfortable. On a day like today, sunny and hot, there was no way her target would not be at the beach. All she had to do was watch and wait.

A small child screamed with excitement, as his family arrived at the beach. His high-pitched squeal startled Aubrey, and she suddenly realised she must have fallen asleep. She scanned the beach and saw that her subject was just arriving – perfect timing.
