The need for isolation started light, soft and slow, like the Caribbean blues. Willow had lost her parents in a plane crash and at first it was quite unbearable, too much to handle and overwhelming, but later she found her way through it. She made up her mind to seek nature in its hidden places, tired of life in the city. She had grown weary of the rumblings, the gawky streets, the looky-loos, stale fish and overpriced food. She despised the overall reliance on convention, and found that what she used to love about the big smoke now just seemed to piss her off.

After their death Willow sought a new life outside the city, in the bush where she could flush out the hectic city pace from her veins, and remodel herself in nature’s eyes. Willow was ready to embrace the tranquil, private life of healing.

At first, it was a bit strange living alone in the farmhouse that had belonged to her parents, but she very quickly found herself starting to enjoy the rhythmic flow of the bush. Her favourites were the chirping birds, the cool breeze, the farm animals, the cosy brick house, and at all times, she enjoyed every moment spent with her farm animals. As a substitute for her friends in the city, she found friendship and comfort in her animal companions.

Most of the time she interacted with them as though they could actually hear her; well, she believed they could, but just couldn’t speak her language in return. Willow did not take offence in their lackadaisical idiosyncrasy. Not now and not at any time soon. They were her family now and she loved each and every one of them, even the not-so-cute reptiles that sort shelter in her garden sheds.

Every day, Willow woke to the sonorous and euphonious music of the birds, the calling of her red-tailed parrot, and the direct ray of the sun that caused a golden reflection on the floor of her brick house. She believed she was never alone, her own company was satisfying, and if she ever felt lonely, which was rare, she had her animals to distract her from the seclusion. She found she could remain happy each day by reminding herself she had no reason to cry, glower or shout, except for the shouts of joy she had during the games of hide and seek with
