Doctor Hank Sanford shifted in his seat as he smiled at his patient sitting rigidly on his Chesterfield couch.

This was not her first session, she had been attending his psychiatry practice for over a year now, but every week she looked like it was her first day.

His office overlooked Sydney Harbour and most days he would stare out of the window at the sensational view. He repeated the question, How does that make you feel? while only half listening to the answer.

Not today; today he was talking with Jane Wilson, and she was discussing one of her more interesting subjects.

Tell me more about her. he asked.

More about my flatmate, Ruby? queried his homely middle-aged patient.

Doctor Sanford squinted his eyes in thought and nodded slowly.

Jane was suddenly defensive, irritated by the thought of having to repeat herself yet again. You know Ruby Castle! She is gorgeous, she is bisexual and she is a nymphomaniac. If you want to know more, then I suggest reading her blog!

The outburst was a breakthrough of sorts. Jane was never aggressive like this, she always protected herself. Controlled herself. Ruby was never a sore spot and despite the immoral behaviour, reprehensible choices and offensive language, Jane considered her to be a good friend.

Doctor Sanford shifted in his seat again and frowned disapprovingly. Jane was doing it again, trying to justify Ruby’s behaviour and blocking out the bad influence she was.

He sighed, like she should have known better. We have discussed this and you know I have to hear it from you.

Jane slumped into the couch, defeated by what she knew to be good for her, and the argument she would never win.

Doctor Sanford relaxed his composure and repeated his request.

Now Jane, tell me more about Ruby.

    CHAPTER ONE

The waves slapped rhythmically against the boat’s hull as it made its way through the rough swell to Darling Point wharf. Jane sat in her usual seat and watched the tourists clutch onto the handrails in fear. A ferry ride through Sydney Harbour was her daily commute to work and lacked the thrill that they were experiencing. She smiled at the delight on some their faces and watched the flurry of picture-taking as they passed Mrs Macquarie’s chair. She contemplated how lucky she was, to take such beauty for granted.

Jane worked in the most popular city of Australia yet didn’t realise that, if tourists from all over the world could compare their photos from the state’s capital they would most likely see three consistent landmarks; The Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and the Ferry lady in the grey suit.

Jane’s predictable routine, regimented clothing and habitual seating meant she was in the background of many Sydney selfies.

The walk home from the wharf was unmemorable. Jane had done it thousands of times in the five years since moving to Rushcutters Bay, and she was on autopilot. Her post-therapy thoughts were, as usual, on her flatmate. A woman she chose because of a personality which was the polar opposite of her own. At the time, Jane thought a confident, sexy and bold woman would help her to escape her introverted shell, but on reflection it had had the opposite effect.

Ruby was a wild child WITH long flaming-red hair and a Geordie English accent. She was rarely at home and when she was, spent most of her time in bed with nameless companions.

Her income was derived from a combination of a very popular blog, a webcam series and her large Twitter following. Jane suspected that most of the money was made from the regular nights on the streets, an accusation Ruby strongly denied.

Nah, that’s a bit of fun, ain’t it? She would always say when questioned.

Jane did not know what was more offensive. Street walking for money or street walking for fun? As long as the rent was paid she tried not to be too judgemental.

The apartment was dark when Jane finally arrived. She knew Ruby was not there and that meant another night alone. She hesitated for a moment before flicking the light switch. She loved to see the city illuminating the horizon in her window and didn’t want the reflection of her light to block it out. Not just yet.

A few seconds later and the view was gone as Jane set about her nightly routine. She slipped off her black court shoes and rubbed her shoulders as she walked into the kitchen. Without even looking through the selection, she took the frozen meal from the stack in the freezer and in one quick motion she had unboxed and positioned it in the microwave. She had 6 minutes and 30 seconds until it was ready. She walked over to Ruby’s room and peeked inside.

The room was as provocative as its resident. Black blinds blocked out the world and protected the identity of the shameless who stayed there. The bed was a king, far too big for the room but not negotiable in size. How else could you accommodate 3 or 4 people overnight? The sheets were, of course silk; Burgundy red in colour, to match the red cushions, red pillows and red towels that were scattered around the room. There was a blanket box at the end of the bed which, no doubt, did not contain extra linen. Some days the contents would be sitting on top. An unseemly collection of toys and lotions that would unsettle even the most liberal minded. Jane had seen this room numerous times but even so, she blushed at the tacky boudoir and closed the door quickly.

Jane yawned, a big lung-filling yawn to relieve the tiredness. It had the opposite effect and made her drowsier. Dinner was still not ready so she decided on a quick change of clothes, and a face wash would be helpful. Her bedroom was a sanctuary; she entered and felt immediately at ease. The clean, organised and neutral room was soothing to her hectic mind.
