Up until her last hand, Jamie-Lea had been hoping that history would repeat itself, that Aiden would lose, that she would have him at her mercy.

Last time they’d played cards, Aiden had ended up tied spread-eagled to their bed. She’d photographed his helplessness then tickled his ribs to choke off his protests.

His body had gone purple, even his face. She’d continued to tickle him and he’d strained to escape her fingers.

“No, please!” he’d begged.

“Promise to do anything?

“Jamie!”

“Promise?” she’d demanded.

As Jamie-Lea reaches to lift her last card, she yearns to have him in her thrall once more, yearns for what she’d make Aiden promise, yearns for the pleasures of promise fulfilled.

Jamie-Lea, barista to the world, has her eyes fixed on the espresso maker. She’s waiting for the water to rise to just the perfect temperature. But her mind has already escaped beyond. Her mind is on her husband, Aiden, and the hijinks they are surely to get up to that night. Friday night!

But it is still only afternoon. Aiden’s fourth-graders are anxious for the final bell to signal the start of the weekend. They’re antsy, talking in small groups instead of concentrating on the math problem he has written on the chalkboard behind him.
