You’ve been giving her the third degree all night, said Marek. It’s time to give it a rest. We’d stripped the woman he was referring to down to her underwear and tied her to a chair.

I shook my head, Technically, the third degree is torture. All I’ve been doing is asking questions.

Asking questions, tying her up, yelling and screaming. It’s close enough.

The woman’s face was expressionless, but her eyes agreed with my partner.

I sat on the bed and looked at her. Marek might not be right about the third degree. Technically we hadn’t done even the first or second degree—we hadn’t put her under arrest or transported her to the police precinct, so calling my interrogation the third degree was a stretch. But my partner was right about needing to give it a rest; I wasn’t getting us anywhere.
