They say that your soles will howl.

My production team, the ones who interviewed you. They said if your feet get tickled that your soles will howl.

I have just sat down to be interviewed. The cameras are rolling. The studio lights are hot. Roxy Lynn Rankin, my favorite—everybody’s favorite—television host, is interviewing me. It’s supposed to be a fluff piece about the psychology and the physiology of tickling, at least that’s what they—her production people—had told me. I’d never been on TV before, I had never even seen the inside of a television studio. I’m a simple nine-to-five office worker. The only reason I’m here is because my response to the show’s online survey about what subjects might interest me had been ‘tickling’. Maybe I had gone into too much detail.

The host smiles at me. If you’re tickled, she prods, you scream bloody murder.

That’s possible. I never really listened to myself.

Maybe you’ve never been recorded before. Rankin makes a motion with her fingers, as if she’s going to tickle me.

I guess not.

Jackie, she says smiling, why don’t you tell us how you got started in tickling?

I feel my body relax. This is what I’d been prepared for. Rankin had been messing with me. I’m sure I was tickled as a child, I say, but the first time I really remember was when I was fourteen.
