About this ebook

When beautiful business woman, Stephanie Spicer, has her romantic future left hanging in the balance by the departure of her American client and lover, Rick, she is devastated. She must also please her demanding boss by attending an important, high-level branding symposium in Spain. Trying to balance her professional commitments with re-thinking her own life, she must decide whether it will be her head or her heart that will win the day.

Persuaded by her new best friend, Asha, to take a short summer break before her business event, it seems that things may be all work and no play for Stephanie as she needs to deliver on an important client account before she leaves. But travelling overnight to Scotland, she has the opportunity to get close to one of her trusted staff. Will she take the chance or will it be close but no cigar?

When she finally gets her feet in the sand in Barcelona, she meets hotel-owners and brothers, Sebastián and Christophe, and Stephanie is presented with a business offer she seems unable to resist, but accepting it means Stephanie must find a way to win the new business without compromising herself and Rick’s PA, her bisexual friend Nix. Seemingly hesitant to become involved in a new relationship, Stephanie receives news from Nix that Rick’s love for her is serious and there is still hope their relationship will re-ignite.

Torn between finding passion in the arms of handsome businessman Sebastián in the heat of the night or keeping her cool and remaining loyal to Rick when her heart still desperately craves him, Stephanie must decide whether to finally leave the past behind. But has Rick forever marked her heart with a soul tattoo?

Is it true you’re leaving, Rick? I need the truth. Stephanie Spicer, the normally cool and collected creative director of London branding agency Conway Creative, was choking back tears as she spoke with anger in her voice.

I wish it wasn’t, Stephanie, but it is. I had nothing to do with it, though. Diane arranged everything, whispered Rick, his speech trembling and unsteady. To Stephanie he looked like a broken man, wounded and crushed by the unassailable action of his overpowering wife and unable now to even look Stephanie in the eye. His normally commanding voice cracked with strained emotion and his face looked pale and drawn. This upset was not of his making and he was crumbling in front of her at the inexorable destiny that was unfolding before him.

What about us, Rick? Is this the end of what we dreamed together?

Things have changed, Stephanie. You must know that I didn’t plan for this, or want what’s happened. Rick steadied himself against the desk in his office as Stephanie’s eyes followed his every move.

So this is it. You’ll disappear back to America in a few days, and continue your life there. I’ll never see you again. Is that really what you want?

Stephanie. This is just an impossible situation for both of us. You know that. Inevitably, we will see each other again, as we’re linked by the work you’re doing for our business. It’s just that...

You’ll be back with your wife, and soon you’ll be playing happy families.

Stephanie hated herself for what she’d just said. It seemed so cruel and unjust, as if she’d not only put the knife in, but twisted it hard. She knew in her heart that Rick was not directing his future at this point, and it was Diane she should save her bile and bitterness for.

    I just don’t know, Stephanie.

Rick Martin, the Group Sales & Operations Director at Sports Gear Worldwide, and Stephanie’s biggest client, was now not only standing in his office, but at a pivotal crossroads in his life. Stephanie knew that he was no longer fully in control of his own future, as if he had boarded a runaway roller coaster heading for the buffers without any brakes. This was the moment that had always been destined, as surely as night follows day. Her heart felt wrenched by the sadness in his face, and she could see he looked like a beaten man. Seeing her lover falter was not what she wanted or desired, but there was still one further thing she needed to confront and her tone mellowed as she spoke, choking back her own tears.

And what about Diane screwing the Company President while your back’s been turned? I suppose you knew about that? As she spoke, the image of Diane in flagrante with Mark Anderson flashed through Stephanie’s mind and she felt a sense of betrayal on her lover’s behalf.

Yes, I did, said Rick, as he put his head in his hands. It was her way of reminding me that I’d been away too long. He looked at Stephanie with tears welling in his eyes, and she felt every strand of her very being been torn asunder as he added, And she knew about me and my PA, Nix, but never you, Stephanie. Never you. You were the secret closest to my heart.

Rick now turned and faced Stephanie full on, and put out his arms to hold her, pulling her trembling body close to his chest. He rested his head against Stephanie’s and stroked her golden hair with his strong fingers. Stephanie took a few seconds to catch her breath and savor Rick’s intimacy, knowing full well such moments of tenderness were on the verge of now slipping away forever.

I hope not, but I’m not so sure, whispered Stephanie, with a note of resignation in her voice.

Diane didn’t know, Stephanie, assured Rick as he continued to hold her. Maybe she was just trying to call your bluff. I believe she even tried to employ you at the company.

She did, and I wasn’t interested. How could that ever work? It would just be too difficult for us both.

Stephanie took a deep, audible breath and exhaled again as she continued to press against him, feeling him, wanting him, despite everything.

And what about love, Rick? she whispered. "Where did that fit into these plans? Did you ever feel the same way about me, as
