About this ebook

A Matilda a Kolibri Kiadó Roald Dahl-életműsorozatának második darabja, amelyet új fordításban, Totth Benedek tolmácsolásában olvashatunk.

„Dorong kisasszony a tanári asztal mögött ült, és rémülten, megbűvölve meredt a pohárban vonagló gőtére. Matilda szintén a pohárra szegezte a tekintetét. És akkor lassan, nagyon lassan, valami roppant különös, egészen szokatlan érzés kerítette hatalmába. A szeme viselkedett a legfurcsábban. Mintha elektromossággal telítődött volna. Mintha egy rettenetes erő forrt, buzgott volna föl a szeme mélyéről. És közben valami egészen mást is érzett, de nem tudta megmondani, mi az. Mintha villámokat szórt volna a szeme. Igen, ez az! Szó szerint apró villámok cikáztak — egyenesen a szeméből!”

Matilda is an exceptional little girl. Pretty much left alone by her parents and brother she teaches herself to read and read she does with a voracious appetite. Learning so much from all the reading she is pretty much a genius. The problem is her parents are pretty much idiots. Mum is only interested in looking pretty, her TV shows and playing bingo. Dad is a used car salesman who is a bit on the shady side and only interested in making money selling to his idiot customers. To make things entertaining and a little more bearable at home, Matilda comes up with some great tricks that tend to drive her parents crazy. Glue in Dad's hat. Adding something to Dad's hair oil that changes his hair colour. When she starts school it it a whole new world. Miss Honey, her teacher, realizes Matilda's brilliance and wants to put her up a few levels. Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress, says no. Even though Miss Trunchbull is the head mistress she HATES children, especially one in the very lowest grades. The children are all afraid of her...except Matilda.Roald Dahl writes from the viewpoint of children. A bit over the top but very entertaining. I enjoy reading his books.

Anmerkung: Die Rezension stammt vom Juli 2007.

In some ways, this is a tough book to read as an adult. Matilda herself is so sweet and smart and lovable. It's so frustrating that her family is horrible and her principal is cruel. Then you're so relieved that she finds someone to appreciate her in her teacher, Miss Honey. But it definitely makes you think about the ways a child's home life affects her education. Matilda is able to overcome it, but how many children never get that opportunity? At first glance, it's a heartwarming and magical book and after some thought, it makes you want to do something to help kids in this situation.

Not quite as I remembered in my childhood but still one of my favorite Roald Dahl books. As a child I remember feeling like I identified myself with Matilda because of her love of reading and learning. An easy read for children but it should be noted that some (very minimal) inappropriate language is used. Just a note for parents who mind that in a childrens book.

Utterly delightful tale of precocious Matilda's revenge upon her neglectful parents and the atrocious headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. The only time she isn't being ignored by her mother and father is when they are heaping scorn about her little shoulders. She teaches herself to read by age three, finding refuge in books. Within a few years, she is taking on Dickens, Hemingway and the like. Hard not to love this child! When her parents finally remember to enroll her in school, she comes under the care of the lovely Miss Honey. We all fall in love with our first grade school teacher, but Miss Honey deserves a special category all to herself. Then the vile Miss Trunchbull makes life so very, very difficult. Matilda's brain cells are soon cogitating on the best plan ever.... As a child, I adored Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. Roald Dahl's droll inventive writing still manages to captivate across the space of a few (!) more decades for this now adult reader. I was drawn to Matilda recently due to rave reviews for exquisite narration of actress Kate Winslet. Winslet brings enormous energy, providing engaging and humorous versions of each character. I think that I would have enjoyed this book no matter what, but Winslet's narration raised it to stratospheric heights. A five star winner for me!

What a wonderful book! In this story of good vs. evil but with funny twists throughout. Roald Dahl, as is his style, has created a family that is despicable, except for Matilda. The father is in a shady business, the mother is entirely self centered, and the brother is a dunce. Matilda, on the other hand, is good and kind and brilliant. Left alone as a small child she feeds her need for knowledge by going to the library and reading everything she can find. When she is old enough, she informs her parents that she should go to school. Matilda ends up in a school run by Miss Trunchbull, the meanest head mistress you could imagine. Her hatred of children is balanced out by the love Miss Honey has for her class. Miss Honey quickly discovers Matilda brilliance and nurtures her learning. From the beginning of the book we get glimpses of Matilda's ability to do magic. Nothing too big or splashy. She uses her magic as a counterbalance to the meanness portrayed in the book. First she uses it on her father, and later on Mrs. Trunchbull. In the end, good wins out over evil, the bad get punished and the good are rewarded.Roald Dahl has a wonderful way of telling stories. There is so much humor in this book that you can't be too afraid of the bad guys.

Matilda is raised by her two dumb parents that do not care about her. They always make her out to be a trouble maker when she is not. In fact she is a very intelligent little girl. She is constantly being punished from the things she enjoys doing. One day Matilda is left home alone and she discovers she has a special power! She begins to use this power to prank her parents. Her parents decide to put her in a new school with a very mean principal. She, along with the other students at the school, are tormented by Miss Trunchbull. Matilda has had enough of Miss Trunchbull. So she gives Miss Trunchbull a lesson that will forever haunt her. This a great book in a sense of showing children the consequences of wrong doings. It’s an example of treat people in a way you would like to be treated.

It is so amazing to me how awful Matilda's parents were. This book must have been written before CPS was a thing. Matilda is a sweet, special child who goes to school with a horrible headmistress. Her teacher, Miss Honey, is sweet and wants to help Matilda's abilities. Soon Matilda learns she has special powers and uses it to help Miss Honey.A great book! I would say watch the movie too, it is a classic too.

Matilda by Ronald Dahl is a good book that I feel students will enjoy. Even though it is about a fifth grade level book I feel like it will be beneficial to them. The book is a delightful story about how a little girl by the name of Maltida Wormwood who grows up with dumb parents that do not appreciate her or care about her. She also has to go to a school that is more like a prison because of the horrible principal that runs like a military camp. Thankful enough Maltida has special powers and a loving teacher named Ms. Honey that helps her overcome everything. In my classroom I would probably use this book to teach lessons on comparing and contrasting the book from the movie. I will also read the book as a read aloud.

I think Matilda is a great book. She's very talented, kind, and big-hearted. I don't realize why her mean old parents don't notice it. I believe that when Matilda went to school, she should've gone up a lot of grades, but Miss Trunchbull, the terrifying principal, wouldn't let her. It's amazing when Matilda finds out she has powers to help her wonderful teacher. It's amazing that in the end, Miss Honey adopts Matilda. :)

This is a great story about how a brilliant, fun young girl grows up in a home not so appreciative of her uniqueness. She attends a strict school where her uniqueness also goes unappreciated. The young girl is befriended by a young teacher at the school and is taught that she is truly special, even though some people belittle her for being unique. This is an amazing book for young children to foster individuality.

I think there are probably enough reviews out there, so I will keep it short. On the villain side we have the evil school principal, Mrs. Trunchball (gotta love that name), Matilda's idiot parents, and her dullard brother. On the hero side we have a wonderful librarian, Mrs. Phelps, Matilda's friends, and the lovely school teacher, Miss Honey (also an appropriate name). I love precocious Matilda and her amusing get-even plans! The villains are perfect and her allies are flawed, but loving and generous. A very funny, wonderful YA book celebrating intelligence and integrity.

Still on my quest to read everything Dahl. I'm positive I read this as a child - I was fascinated with the idea of living with my teacher. The torture device the headmistress has also stuck in my mind, although it turns out it's never used in the telling of the story, only spoken of having been used in the past. Funny. Guess I was wholly disturbed by it.

Matilda is a precocious 5-year-old with a brilliant mind. Her parents are the worst sort of people and think reading is horrible. Luckily she has a kind teacher, Miss Honey, who sees the potential in her work. The school Matilda attends is run by the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull, one of the all-time best villains in children’s literature. I read this book so many times when I was little and I loved returning to it. I was an avid reader at a young age and I identified with Matilda. Obviously I wasn’t as advanced as her and my parents actually supported reading, but I still loved her story. I love almost everything Roald Dahl wrote, but this remains my favorite. Sure, the story is a bit far-fetched when it comes to Matilda’s intelligence and child custody laws, but who cares? It’s a children’s story and I love it. BOTTOM LINE: An absolute childhood favorite that I adore. Perfect for that little reader in your life.

I loved this book about a precocious child who loves to read when I was young, and I still do. As in all Dahl's tales, mean and bad people (usually grownups) get their comeuppance and the good but mistreated people are rewarded.

The figure of Miss Trunchbull is one of Dahl's best villains - ridiculously over-the-top, she still reminds everyone of a teacher who terrified them at school.

Above all, the story of Matilda shares the joy of reading. It's definitely a book to recommend to children of all ages!

In this classic story, Matilda is an extraordinarily precocious and gifted five year old who endures her horrible parents, confronts and defeats the abusive school headmistress, Mrs. Trunchbull, and finds help and solace in her teacher Miss Honey. Like many of Roald Dahl's books, this story is by turns funny, caustic, hyperbolic, surreal, sad, and wise.

One of the best children's books out there. Not only did my son stay absorbed throughout the book and ask for various chapters to be read more than once, but I enjoyed this as well years after reading it as a kid.

Now this deserves 5 stars, but some parents can't get passed the harsh language found in various spots. But these areas are easily avoided and doing so will allow you to truly enjoy this classic.

In my opinion, Matilda is a classic children’s chapter book that can be enjoyed by many older readers. I like this book for several reasons. The language is very descriptive and attention grabbing. The animated vocabulary and sentence structure make the story come to life. Readers are hooked into the story and remain interested throughout their reading. An example of descriptive language is, “He had a mountain to climb and he was jolly well going to reach the top or die in the attempt,” describing Bruce eating the enormous chocolate cake forced on by the Trunchbull. I like the use of dialogue and description of events because it makes the reader feel as if these events are actually occurring. The book is organized into 21 chapters, which is appropriate for an advanced reader. The chapters have appropriate title names, such as “The Ghost” and “A New Home.” The illustrations sketches are appropriate because they provide a break in the reading. I love the characters in the story because they are very believable and well developed. The Trunchbull can relate to a child’s mean principal. Matilda’s parents can relate to parents who sometimes ignore their child’s interests. Miss Honey can relate to a child’s teacher they adore and see as the maternal figure. Readers will wish they had the same powers as Matilda, which is to change the world for the better and have good conquer evil. I love the character of Matilda and her relationship with Miss Honey. Matilda is a sweet young girl, unappreciated by her parents, with high intelligence and magical telekinetic powers. Miss Honey is the only adult who sees Matilda for the amazing person she is. Miss Honey is also a sweet woman who has been underappreciated her whole life. The two are a perfect mother-daughter match. I enjoy the plot because it contains a great amount of suspense and tension. Every time the Trunchbull enters a seen, tension and fear fill the atmosphere. The reader can feel the panic from the Trunchbull as they read. There are also many conflicts displayed in this text. These conflicts are between Matilda and her family, Matilda and the Trunchbull, and the Trunchbull and Miss Honey. Conflicts make for a more interesting story. Fortunately, Matilda overcomes these conflicts because of her magic powers and her desire for a better life with Miss Honey. The big idea of this story is goodness will overcome evil.
