Introduction
Thank you for choosing to read this guide to beginners knitting. There was a time that knitting was considered a pastime for the older lady or more specifically grandmas, however over the past few years knitting has become a very fashionable pastime with many famous people citing it as their favorite way to relax.
Whatever your reason for wanting to learn to knit, this guide has been put together in the most simplistic form with all of the basic information that you need to be able to understand in order for you to be able to begin making your own cool and stylish knitted projects.
Stop thinking that knitting is far too complicated because it really is a great pastime that one mastered you will ask yourself why you did not start sooner.
All that is left for you to do is pick up your needles and get to work, good luck but more importantly enjoy!
Chapter 1 – Knitting Yarn
Before you can even begin to learn how to knit you need to buy some basic essentials. Unlike many other hobbies and pastimes knitting does not require expensive, hard to decipher equipment in fact it is the total opposite. All you really need is a pair of pointed sticks and some type of string!
What is yarn?
The first thing you need when embarking on any type of knitting is yarn. Yarn is readily available in a multitude of places, however as a beginner I would recommend visiting you local arts and crafts store as there will be experiences assistants should you need direction.
Yarn packaging
Yarn is sold in a variety of packaging and can come in balls, skeins or hanks. Hanks are the common name given to yarn that you have to roll into a ball yourself.
Yarn label
Regardless of how the yarn is packaged there will be a label. This label contains vital information so be sure not to throw it away. The label contains the following:
- Name & Manufacturer
Every label will specify the manufacturer and the name that has been given to the yarn. The names given to yarns can be descriptive or just plain silly! When you are looking for a particular yarn it is etiquette to ask for it by name and manufacturer.
- Fiber content
The fiber content is the description of what the yarn is made from (the ingredients). Yarn can be made from a variety of sources such as wool, cotton etc. Different fibers will all kit in very different ways.
- Guage/suggested needle size
It is important to realize from day one that the label’s needle and guage suggestions are just suggestions. It is important to swatch with the yarb as this is the only way to ensure you have the right guage prior to beginning a knitting project.
- Care instructions
The majority of yarn labels will provide information on how you can care for the finished project, this is a good reason for keeping the label safe, chances are when you decide to wash your knitted scarf months down the line you are going to need to re-read the care information.
- Dye lot number and name of color
Yarn labels also show the name given to the color which can be specific such as sunshine yellow, alternatively this may just be a number. Most yarns also offer a dye lot number, due to the variations that can occur you need to always try to keep with the same dye lot number to ensure consistency in the color.
- Length and weight
