    I stared at the imposing gate and the high fence, then at my phone. I was definitely at the right address, yet this wasn’t what I’d expected. Shrugging, I leaned out and rang the bell. After a long moment, a voice crackled over the intercom.

    Yes?

    Ah, my name is Spencer. I’m the new pool boy?

    Right. Drive up to the main house. Someone will meet you there.

    The gate slowly swung open. I headed up the drive-way. With growing curiosity, I looked around. The grounds were huge and looked well kept. It made me question even more just why they were looking for a pool boy and were willing to give a poor guy with no experience a chance. If the pool was anything like the grounds, they should hire some professional service and not a student needing a part-time job to pay his bills.

    When my buddy Kevin had told me about the job, it had sounded too good to be true. Part-time work as a pool boy with flexible hours and really well-paid. As in extremely well-paid, much better than any other job I’d looked at.

    I’d applied immediately. I’d sent in my CV and hoped for the best. The call that came a few days later had still taken me by surprise, because I wasn’t really qualified. Also, lately, my luck where jobs were concerned hadn’t been the best. There were just too many people looking for work.

    The man on the phone had sounded like a lawyer, coldly professional and very competent. He’d also insisted that I mail them some photographs of me before we continued talking. Head-shot, body-shot, casual pictures, not the kind taken in a studio. Those were the kind of pictures he’d asked for.

    That had been downright unusual and strange, but I’d decided to go along
