The classifications of sexual activity in the armed forces

As a former career officer in the British army, I’ve often been asked if guys in the forces think about having sex with each other. It’s sort of like asking what do fish think about while they’re swimming all day. Water, of course. Guys anywhere and everywhere think about sex. Guys in the army perhaps more so. With so much testosterone flying around and so little places to put it, of course it’s going to spill out.

First, we have to define our terms. Thinking about sex in an all-male environment manifests itself in different ways. The first category I will call sexualized horseplay. I describe it only as sexualized because it involves sexual organs, but it’s really not very erotic, and it happens all the time and everywhere. Arse slapping, dick punching, nipple twisting. The Americans tend to take it a bit farther than others, but it’s so commonplace it’s hardly even sexual.

For example, on a military base, a slap on the backside is hardly cause for harassment. It’s more like a high-five or a fist bump. Friendly, humorous, even loving. I’ve seen it between buddies and mates. Not heavy slaps on the buttocks, but almost caressing across tight fatigues or underwear. Sometimes accompanied by a fake sniff and a disgust at the result. The guys on a base and in a unit are used to each other’s smells, and happy to comment.

Nudity is also commonplace on a military base. Guys get naked in the barracks, and often sleep in starkers. Those tin huts out in the deserts of the Middle East are hot. Air conditioning is never a high priority, so sweaty nakedness is barely even registered, and certainly not sexual. Less common
